    Aufgabe
Prequalification are invited for Provision of Geophysical Survey of the Karezes Irrigation System.A Karez is a traditional water management mechanism, which used
throughout Afghanistan. And it is common since back thousands of years in
Afghanistan, Iran, Middle East and North Africa. It is one of the most
economical methods of tapping groundwater for irrigation purposes. It is
environmentally safe and water is drawn by use of gravity. In Afghanistan
mainly the Karez systems are allocated in 19 provinces, according to the
report of 1978 available with Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and
Development (MRRD), 168,000 ha or 7% of lands were irrigated
form 6,741 Karezes. Shobair and Alim (2004) reported 36% of
Karezes dried out and the remaining operating Karezes with
flow reduced as much as 83%. Since the multi-year drought
that began in 1998, many Karezes have stopped flowing.
One of the methods to increase the discharge of Karez is to recharge the
aquifer artificially. This can be done by different methods, which are
divided by direct methods "surface methods" and indirect
methods "underground recharge". To enhance groundwater
infiltration by providing more residence time with the help of structural
and non-structural measures (Percolation tanks, Ponds, Rainwater
    harvesting technics, Water conservation structures…).
Sometimes the recharging from the ground surface to the aquifer is
impossible due to different reasons; then, the method of underground
    feeding should be adopted

    • Subject: Expression of Interest (EOI) Project Title: Geophysical Survey of the Karezes Irrigation System Expire Date: 31, May 2017 ABOUT AGRICULTURE & DEVELOPMENT ADVISOR TO H.E PRESIDENT: This office will be responsible for formulating the overall strategic goals of economic development of Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It will accomplish following objectives through three work streams: -To coordinate policy-making for domestic agriculture and development issues -Advisory to the president on Agriculture and Development policies - To ensure that policy decisions are consistent with the President’s vision in Agriculture and Development. -To monitor the implementation of Agriculture and Development policies and agendas of the President. -To Research on Agriculture, Water, and their economic impacts for policy and Strategic Advices PROJECT DATA Project Name Geophysical Survey of the Karezes Irrigation System Assignment A Karez is a traditional water management mechanism, which used throughout Afghanistan. And it is common since back thousands of years in Afghanistan, Iran, Middle East and North Africa. It is one of the most economical methods of tapping groundwater for irrigation purposes. It is environmentally safe and water is drawn by use of gravity. In Afghanistan mainly the Karez systems are allocated in 19 provinces, according to the report of 1978 available with Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), 168,000 ha or 7% of lands were irrigated form 6,741 Karezes. Shobair and Alim (2004) reported 36% of Karezes dried out and the remaining operating Karezes with flow reduced as much as 83%. Since the multi-year drought that began in 1998, many Karezes have stopped flowing. One of the methods to increase the discharge of Karez is to recharge the aquifer artificially. This can be done by different methods, which are divided by direct methods "surface methods" and indirect methods "underground recharge". To enhance groundwater infiltration by providing more residence time with the help of structural and non-structural measures (Percolation tanks, Ponds, Rainwater harvesting technics, Water conservation structures…). Sometimes the recharging from the ground surface to the aquifer is impossible due to different reasons; then, the method of underground feeding should be adopted. In above regard AOP-CAAD is willing to announce for geophysical survey of two Karezes located in Kandahar and Kabul provinces to determine the groundwater table and lithology of the study area for determination of suitable sites to artificial recharging technics. Interested Firms (companies and NGOs) are requested to submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) including the below required documents: a. Assignment Specific Qualifications and Experience, CV’s of exact experts who are supposed to implement the projects b. Eligibility Declaration c. A full methodology for each location d. BOQ for each location e. A delivery period with Action Plan for each location Note: This is a pilot project, once the results get determine well it will extend for other Karezes.
