Reinventing our rivers / Revons nos rivières

The City of Québec is launching an international call for ideas to rehabilitate the major rivers flowing through its territory, i.e., the Cap-Rouge, St. Charles, Beauport, and Montmorency rivers. Although they each have their own specific physical characteristics, history, potential, and issues, these rivers share a rich legacy as tributaries of the mighty St. Lawrence that runs alongside Québec City and has shaped its identity since the city was founded in 1608.

This call for ideas comes at a critical time, when city officials are planning measures to develop and ensure the sustainability of Québec City’s rivers. It will inspire and eventually guide the planning of a broad range of medium- to long-term initiatives. It will also be an opportunity to create a hallmark for each river in the plan or a common thread between them.

The main purpose of the international competition is to inspire city officials to develop and implement a master plan to meet the following objectives:

− Improve river accessibility while preserving river quality
− Protect and promote sensitive natural areas
− Overcome recreational limitations and use the rivers year-round
− Enhance residents’ sense of ownership of the rivers and their surrounding environments
− Link existing and future recreational and tourism facilities
− Identify urban development and renewal opportunities in specific areas of interest
− Build more connections with neighbourhoods
− Promote culture and heritage

ELIGIBILITY

This is a single-phase, multidisciplinary competition that is international in scope. It is open to:
- landscape architects
- urban designers, architects
- city planners
- other environmental design professionals

They can propose ambitious yet realistic concepts to guide the transformation and conservation of Québec City’s rivers, their banks, and the natural and developed areas that border them.
