Der Entwurf und der Bau des Children’s Library Discovery Center (CLDC) ist die Umsetzung der ersten Phase des Masterplans für die Sanierung und Modernisierung der 25.600qm großen Queens Central Library, der von 1100 Architect entwickelt wurde. Der Masterplan und somit auch das CLDC sind Teil des New York City Design Excellence Programm, das von Bürgermeister Bloomberg im Jahr 2004 ins Leben gerufen wurde.
Das CLDC ist ein zweistöckiger Erweiterungsbau an das bestehende Gebäude der Zentralbibliothek der Queens Library. Die glänzende und leuchtende Glasfassade wirkt als ein Anziehungspunkt im Strassenbild und etabliert die Bibliothek als einen zentralen, kulturellen und sozialen Ort für die multikulturelle Bevölkerung des Stadtteils Queens. Der Entwurf nutzt die Ecksituation des gläsernen Baukörpers durch strategische angeordnete transparente Elemente aus, um somit einen Dialog zwischen Außen- und Innenraum herzustellen und viel natürliches Licht in das Gebäude eindringen zu lassen. Des Weiteren wurden die Außenwände massiver gestaltet um Sitzmöglichkeiten zum lesen und „sozializing“ zu bieten.

The design and construction of the Children’s Library Discovery Center (CLDC) is the implementation of one of the first phases of 1100 Architect’s master plan for the renovation and modernization of the 275,000-square-foot Queens Central Library. The CLDC is a 22,000-square-foot, two-story addition adjacent to the existing Central Library building. The glowing glass façade will be a beacon in the surrounding community and is elemental in increasing the library’s visibility and reintroducing it as a central cultural and social destination. Situated on a corner, the new addition takes advantage of its exposure to the street, creating a dialogue between the interior and exterior through the use of large transparent windows that allow an abundance of natural light to enter. The perimeter wall has been thickened to incorporate quiet reading nooks and intimate social spaces. This project will receive a LEED Silver rating.
