    The London Borough of Croydon is seeking one or 2 exceptional multi-disciplinary design teams to deliver the 2 most important public realm projects in Croydon in a generation; taking them from RIBA stage C through to completion. The East Croydon Interchange and West Croydon Interchange projects will be the cornerstones of Croydon’s extensive Connected Croydon public realm programme, the result of 3 years of collaborative masterplanning. Croydon expects the new interchange spaces at East Croydon and West Croydon to be transformational, to set the standard for Croydon’s future public realm, and to act as a catalyst for a new phase of delivery in Croydon’s regeneration.
    Scope of services
    The London Borough of Croydon is seeking one or 2 exceptional multi-disciplinary design teams to deliver the 2 most important public realm projects in Croydon in a generation. The East Croydon interchange and West Croydon interchange projects will be the cornerstones of Croydon’s extensive Connected Croydon public realm programme, the result of 3 years of collaborative masterplanning. Croydon expects the new interchange spaces at East Croydon and West Croydon to be transformational, to set the standard for Croydon’s future public realm, and to act as a catalyst for a new phase of delivery in Croydon’s regeneration.
    East Croydon interchange project.
    This 4 400 000 GBP scheme will transform the Borough’s front door into a coherent, high quality and welcoming public space that is unique to Croydon. The project will deliver: — A positive first impression that announces passengers’ arrival in Croydon, — A welcoming pedestrian experience with improved surfaces, soft landscaping, decluttered pedestrian areas and integrated safety and security measures, — Seamless pedestrian flows between the train station, tram stop and bus station, — A new level walkway and integrated cycle hub on Billinton Hill, — Safer, more direct crossings on George Street, — Rationalised configuration of Billinton Hill for taxis and kiss & ride.
    West Croydon interchange project.
    This 4 600 000 GBP scheme will build on the best aspects of West Croydon to create a public realm that is welcoming, high quality and inclusive; supporting the special character and diverse mix of the West Croydon area.
    The project will deliver: — An arrival space that reveals and celebrates the best of West Croydon, — A transformed public realm in terms of capacity, levels, materials, accessibility and appearance with reduced street clutter, — Seamless pedestrian flows between transport modes aligned with pedestrian desire lines, — A re-configured junction layout at West Croydon Circus and a new crossing across Station Road next to the West Croydon Tram stop, — An Interchange Spine integrating tram stop infrastructure and related facilities to act as a prominent wayfinding feature, — A shared surface treatment at the western end of Poplar Walk, facilitating movement between West Croydon and Croydon’s retail core.
