    TAKe OFF JULY 11th 2012 | LANDING AND AWARDS JULY 14th 2012

The world's first real-time architecture competition offers selected teams only three days & three nights to design and build interventions in public space in response to local needs.

The competition is defined by an extreme deadline, a tight budget and limited space and will challenge participants to rapidly leave a lasting impact on the city's urban fabric. They will be battling the clock, the restrictive conditions and each other, to envision and realize projects in response to the spatial and social challenges the sites and missions offer.

The international teams will include of architects, designers, artists, craftspeople and students, and generally nice people. Teams will come to stuttgart armed with a passion for action, and ready to volunteer their time and expertise to help with community needs. We believe change shouldnt take long, and is up to all of us.

All participants will live together on site, in an old disused train-repair hanger converted into a sleep/work center, thus enriching the neighborhood with a multi-cultural intense experience.
Teams will receive a budget for materials, a central prefabrication camp, a team of 'Angels' (construction and safety engineers) and a truck(!).

The missions and sites will be assigned randomly on take off day. An International panel of jury will include prominent leaders, architects and curators. The winning team will gain a prize of 4000$.
Stuttgart 21 is the biggest redevelopment site in Europe. Following plans to dig the entire main train station and leading lines underground, a local upheaval and social protest arose, and the city's planning department went back to the drawing board on big parts of their plans.

In this context of civic discontent, 72 Hour Urban Action and local partner Kunstverein Wagenhallen, work together to provide residents and municipality with alternative mechanisms for participatory urban planning. In 2011 we started working on a long-term program under the title Post 21. The program suggests a series of events that over the course of 5 years, in order to seek alternative approaches to city planning and different tactics for engaging residents in placemaking. This five-year program is coming out of the Wagenhallen.

The Wagenhallen is located in the Nordbahnhof part of the Rosentstein district right at the center of Stuttgart. It is in fact a defunct locomotive repair hangar from the turn of the 20th century. In the past years it has transformed into Stuttgart's creative hub. It houses art and design studios, performance and music venues and an organic kitchen. It is a place for creatives of all disciplines to live and work in. The site of the Wagenhallen also includes the wagons now used for living, the junkyard, and a communal garden on the edge of the city cemetery.

Today the Wagenhallen is surrounded by large construction sites that leave the hall standing as an island in an almost inaccessible area. Connections to local residential and offices buildings in the nearby streets are difficult and hidden, and many of the immediate neighbours are not even aware that the Wagenhallen is there for them to enjoy.
