      INTRODUCTION

      In 2011, City of Abbotsford Council adopted the Public Art Policy to promote and facilitate the integration of public art throughout Abbotsford. The Policy aims to establish creative and cultural expression in public spaces and across the city, celebrating local heritage, and embracing a sense of experimentation in the activation of making beautiful and interesting public places for people. The specific goals are to be diverse and inclusive, to animate Abbotsford's public realm, and draw attention to the city as a vital municipality which promotes arts, culture, and heritage.

      PROJECT OVERVIEW

      The City of Abbotsford's new Salton Road Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge project is a key component of the City's strategic goal to enhance multi-modal transportation systems in the community to support walking, cycling and transit. This crucial and highly visible project is seeking the innovative expertise and artistic expression of proven industry leaders to integrate public art with the bridge.

      The design/build project has been awarded to Graham Infrastructure LP and Associated Engineering Ltd with the aim to create the most effective and delightful connection between the north and south terminations of Salton Road. By connecting Salton Road for active modes of transportation, the new bridge underpins service of the City's key policy objectives including developing complete neighbourhoods, active transportation, a place for people, and built system improvements. The new bridge also directly addresses many of the City's Official Community Plan goals, particularly:

      . Integrating the community and the University of Fraser Valley Campus;
      . Increasing transportation choices;
      . Responsible land management;
      . Developing sustainable communities;
      . Protecting the environment;
      . Growing a sustainable economy;
      . Managing energy responsibly.

      By enabling a shift to active transportation, the Salton Road Bridge promotes greenhouse gas reduction and creates a critical connection between the developed urban core to the north of Highway 1 with the City's Entertainment and Sports Centre, as well as the quickly developing U-District to the south. The accepted design has been developed to establish this connection using the available footprint in a way that is accessible and friendly to users. The clear-span, twin inclined tied-arch design expresses the bridge's function of "leaping" across Highway 1.
