    Aufgabe
“A small house — universal design, to a 100 years of Bauhaus.”
The German word “Schrebergärten” translates as allotment gardens.
According to recent estimates, there are around 2.3 million allotment gardens in Europe, which often have small houses built on them. The Small House of Universal Design Award aims at furthering this concept on a global scale.
Universal Design calls out to architects, designers, entrepreneurs, students and all institutions throughout Europe to participate in a competition of a slightly different kind.
On the occasion of 100 years of German Bauhaus, the aim for participants of the award is to design a concept for a small house including the creation of a model, — following Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius’ original definition of a school of building pursuing a “total” work of art through interdisciplinarity.
Its fundamental themes include a focus on simplifying and furthering artisanal handicrafts. In a Universal Design, this also means to think of the human as the centre and beginning of all design originating from there. When creating a small house, this means to increase functionality through contemporary design, focused on ideal proportions and needs of the human to live in it.
Tackling modern society’s issues, environmentally friendly, sustainable solutions which offer versatile application methods are especially sought after and will be presented at the award. The Small House of Universal Design Award exhibition will be organised at
the Ernst Neufert Box located in Weimar-Gelmeroda. Ernst Neufert was one of the first students at the original Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919. He later went on to work in a leading position under Walter Gropius and is known for his functional creations following Bauhaus ideas, especially after the war ended. Hosting the exhibition at the Ernst Neufert Box will close the circle to the occasion of 100 years of Bauhaus.
