A World Center For Extreme Tourism in Oymyakon (RU)

Development of a concept of the Oymyakon tourism cluster via an Open Competition with international participation.

Oymyakon is known as the pole of cold and is included in the list of settlements with the most extreme conditions for human life. The lowest temperature in the northern hemisphere was recorded there -71.2°С. It is believed that it is there that the keeper of the world’s cold, Chyskhaan, lives. The Yakut frosts attract tourists from all over the world, including global celebrities. Hollywood actors Tom Hardy and Ewan MacGregor have visited Oymyakon. The Government of the Republic of Sakha intends to develop Oymyakon as one of the most significant tourist sites in Yakutia and plans to increase the number of tourists several times by 2028.
Competition will bring together Russian and international experts in the fields of architecture, design and development of tourism clusters, in order to uncover the potential of Oymyakon as a world center for extreme tourism and ice experiences.

The competition is taking place with the support of the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)(Russia). The initiators of the competition are the LETO Competence Center for Issues of the Urban Environment of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the non-profit Special Purpose Fund of Future Generations, with the Agency for Strategic Development CENTER serving as strategic partner and consultant.
