Erläuterungstext
CONCEPT
Architecture acts as a neutral container stim- ulating knowledge exchange without creating any disruptions to the rhythm of everyday life. Informal areas in the separation between the ‘machine’ itself and its protective skin help pro- tecting the laboratories and allow visitors and staff to see the ‘machine’ in operation. A com- pact and clear layout optimizes the interplay of different functions in the building. Use of sand- stone on the facade hints at ancient traditions of construction typical for this region.
CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS
Structure
— composite solution with a reinforced concrete envelope stabilized by central concrete cores and shear walls;
— flat reinforced concrete slabs with no beams underneath;
— steel truss spans across the cleanroom and providing the support for concrete slabs on Level 1 and 2;
— the walls of the truss create the walls of the Level 1 laboratories;
— use of materials rather than products, all locally sourced.
Foundation
— linear pads linked by the monolithic ground slab;
— all foundations jointly activated to distribute and dissipate horizontal forces from wind and seismic activity.
Facade
— naturally shaded, with insulated glass elements;
— modular natural stone cover, insulated and fixed to load bearing concrete structure.
CLEANROOM AND LABORATORIES
— cleanroom as an entirely column-free space,
— visual connection with the visitors centre.
ENGINEERING AND SUSTAINABILITY
A three-step methodology for analysing and improving energy usage is proposed:
— minimize energy needs,
— optimize technology
— use renewable resources.
It is accompanied by a sustainability strategy for the use of materials and water. Use of passive means and the advantages of local climate will contribute to the higher performance of the laboratories.
Total Gross Area (m2): 6 536 Building height (m) 17 GEOMETRY
