Erläuterungstext

General approach and aim
The international and interdisciplinary Team BAUBOTANIK was built up especially for this competition to realize a unique and innovative approach: A holistic design of a park that overcomes traditional differences between nature and culture. The team members and associated collaborators and consultants are working in all scales on the fusion of architecture and nature, city and landscape, buildings and plants, ecosystems and social systems…

Design Team
The work of the architects, urban planners and researchers Ferdinand Ludwig and Daniel Schönle (ludwig.schönle) is focussing on the topic “Baubotanik”. The Baubotanik approach understands trunks, branches and roots of trees as „living building material“ and follows the aim to merge buildings and trees on a structural level into a type of growing and living architecture. Within this very specific and innovative approach ludwig.schönle have more than 10 years of experience in research, conceptual design and realization of buildings and open spaces that combine living plants with architectural design.

The work of the office Allmann Sattler Wappner (ASW) is characterised by the search for a context-related dialogue, identifying with the surroundings and at the same time offering appropriate consumption of resources. In projects like the “Haus der Gegenwart” (house of presence) or the office building in Münster inner and outer spaces are merging to one entity, thus nature and architecture are blurring on a spatial and aesthetic level. At the same time the office with its 60 employees and internationally recognized projects is adding a high level of professional experience to the team.

The biologist Carlo Scoccianti stands for a new method of interacting with the landscape. His projects are on the one hand specific spaces shaped according to aesthetic choices and on the other hand they are living, dynamic and interactive settings profoundly tied to the larger area in which they are located to promote habitats for flora and fauna. This ecosystemic and process based approach is closely linked to the Baubotanik approach, expanding it to a much larger scale. Since many of his projects are located in Tuscany Carlo Soccianti bring in a very profound knowledge of the local flora, fauna and landscape.

Altogether the team sees the task of the competition not in designing a park as final object but more in designing a basic configuration of public spaces, buildings and vegetal structures that allows social and ecological processes to take place. Therefore the team is supported by three collaborators and consultants.

Collaborators and Consultants Studio umschichten uses temporary architecture as an approach for immediate action and creates built interventions in order to display local needs, ideas or passion. umschichten visualizes theories, problems or a constellation of men and material by thinking about urban identities and the representation of different social and cultural groups in a city. Studio umschichten will accompany the design and realization process to take advantage of existing structures the demolition process of the hospital and to encourage interaction with local stakeholders.

The practise of the landscape architect Sergio Sanna is focussing on workshops as an alternative approach to landscape design. Based on these experiences Sergio Sannas role as a collaborator will be to intermesh the participatory and social approach with the architectural and ecological strategies to generate a symbiosis between urban and natural developments.

The consortium green4cities with envimet will accompany and evaluate the design in all steps from the perspective of urban microclimate to maximize the ecological benefits for all park users and inhabitants of Prato.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

The skyline in Prato is characterized by peaks or high buildings. In the city center, inside the area delimited by the medieval walls, historical towers and other important buildings are numerous; outside, chimneys and water towers stand as symbols of the industrial city. The project proposes to add some emblematic “living tower” to enrich the skyline and represent the social, cultural and economical transformation ongoing in Prato. The towers, with their concrete bones – which are the only remaining portions of the old hospital – and the plants growing on them, connect past and future […].
