From storage cylinder to knowledge centre, tourist attraction and city icon.
LAVA’s winning competition entry for an energy park and energy storage building will commence construction in 2017.
The existing cylindrical-shaped storage centre is transformed into a dynamic sculpture, a city icon, a knowledge hub on sustainable energy and fully accessible to the public with city views.A multi-layered facade structure is inspired by the geometries of nature. An inner shell coloured in different shades of blue wraps the building. Tilted elliptical rings positioned around the cylinder continue in the outer façade with "energy loops" circling the structure and rising dramatically to the top. A cable network between the steel rings forms the outer façade layer.Around 20,000 diamond-shaped plates of thin stainless steel are hooked with a simple elastic connection in the meshes of this steel network allowing them to twist up to 90 degrees in the wind. The complex interplay of movement, light and shadow is generated by sun and wind, with no additional energy or complicated technology required.Visitors will reach an elliptical entrance level where two elevators take them to a roof terrace with large staggered terraces and event spaces and a bistro. The complex will be one of the tallest buildings in Heidelberg and will be a strong symbol of the transition towards renewables.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht
Der Entwurf besticht durch seine skulpturale Großform, die durch ihre Fernwirkung ein markantes Signal im Stadtraum setzt.
Diese zunächst rein technische Form wird überlagert mit einem pixelartigem Muster aus Edelstahlplatten, die in ein Seilnetz eingehängt werden. Das vorgespannte Seilnetz mit seiner zweisinnigen Krümmung folgt klassischen Konstruktionsprinzipien. Es übernimmt gleichzeitig den vertikalen Lastabtrag für die Aussteifungsringe, an welche die Treppen angehängt sind.
Der Baukörper ist in Ost-West-Richtung orientiert und folgt städtebaulichen Bezügen. Die Aussicht auf die Stadt Heidelberg ist durch zwei Panoramaaufzüge und auf der obersten Dachterrasse gewährleistet. In der weiteren Bearbeitung sollte dieser Sichtbezug auch für den Gatronomiebereich erlebbar gemacht werden.
Der Freiraum ist dynamisch gestaltet und stellt damit eine gute Interpretation der Entwurfsaufgabe dar. Der Haupteingang auf der Rückseite des Speichers erscheint zu reduziert. Die Steganbindung über das adViva-Gelände ist gut gelöst, da sie keinerlei Einschränkung der Nutzbarkeit der darunterliegenden Büroräume mit sich bringt. Die Außentreppe zur Erschließung des unteren Niveaus stellt eine Einschränkung für adViva dar, da sie über ihre komplette Länge vor der EG-Fassade des adViva-Gebäudes verläuft.
Die Gebäudegrundform des Speichers als technisches Bauwerk ist weiterhin wahrnehmbar.
Durch die Einkleidung mit einer wiederum technischen Struktur, die aber durch ihre freie Form einen spielerischen Ausdruck hat, entsteht ein spannungsreiches Gesamt-Ensemble. Die Verteilung der Edelstahlplatten bietet Potential im Hinblick auf unterschiedliche Transparenzgrade der Hülle und bietet auch die Möglichkeit einer künstlerischen Bearbeitung.
Die Gesamtkosten für die Arbeit liegen gemäß Vorprüfung im oberen mittleren Bereich.
