Das Haus mit der Elefantenhaut mag auf den ersten Blick manchen Passanten im beschaulichen Burgenland befremden, doch Nettobaukosten von 75.000 Euro für 100qm Wohnfläche dürften auch Zweifler überzeugen.
Das geringe Budget war Herausforderung und Chance zugleich. Konzentration auf das Wesentliche stand schon bei der Entwicklung des Raumprogramms und der Grundrissaufteilung im Vordergrund.
Die Aufenthaltsräume docken an einen zentralen Versorgungskern mit WC, Vorraum und Badezimmer und sind auf verschiedenen Ebenen angeordnet. Es entstehen charakteristische Raumhöhen und differenzierte Ausblicke in die umliegenden Obstgärten.
Die Entwicklung einer kostengünstigen Außenhaut wurde zum Forschungsprojekt. Das Resultat: eine Holzkonstruktion mit aufgespritztem Polyurethanschaum und zusätzlicher UV-Schutzbeschichtung. Trotz der dünnen Wandstärke von nur 10cm bzw. Dachaufbaus von nur 15cm werden die Vorgaben der Wärmeschutzverordnung erreicht.
Die ungewöhnliche äußere Erscheinung wird durch die bewusste Einfachheit in den Proportionen der Fassade und der Öffnungen in die Normalität des gebräuchlichen burgenländischen Hauses zurückgeführt.

The “house with the elephant skin” is situated in the lowland of the eastern Austrian province Burgenland in the middle of an old fruit orchard.
The layout is kept simple but attentively designed: roughly 100m2 floor area - organised around a central service core with entrance porch - are placed on slightly different levels and therefore each room has its characteristic ceiling height and offers views through the branches of the fruit trees from different angles.
Due to the tight budget of the client, planning work became an act of real research. With conventional facade and roof systems, it would not have been possible to keep within the cost constraints. A new economical external skin had to be developed: A decision was made in favour to a free wood construction with roof and walls made of packaging plywood. The outer layer is a sprayed polyurethane foam with an additional moisture-diffusing UV protection layer on the wall and a 2-3mm coating to the roof. In spite of the minimal thickness of the walls (10cm) and roof (15cm) the construction fulfils the requirements of the local building regulations.
By simple proportions of façade and windows the extraordinary appearance of the house is led back to a usual house in the province of Burgenland.
