Erläuterungstext

The contextual characteristics prompted us to treat this project in a spirit of clarity, and sobriety.

It is a building very close to the ground, especially low to merge into one with the landscape from which two volumes, both concert halls, arise.

Kauna’s New Concert Hall functions as an attractive pole will transform the neighborhood and the banks of the Niemens shore. More than a new urban landscape point of view, it will emphasize the cultural and social influences of the city.
The new building functions as a public space open to the outside will be accessible by everyone. The building tries to erase the boundaries between inside and outside. The river and the shore nourish the experience of the public walking inside the public building. The new concert hall is designed as a pier, as an infrastructure that offers panoramic views.

Through a measured play of transparency, the new concert hall is a showcase of the city. Interior activities and life are visible from the urban landscape. The building is designed as window onto the city. From a very simple parallelepiped shape, we worked on three different registers of architectural symbols in order to create an outstanding building driven by simplicity.

Contrast is a key theme of the project. We worked on alternating lightness and massiveness, clearness and obscureness, transparency and opacity, emptiness and fullness. A low glazed range of lightness detaches the project from the ground. The lively lobby is see trough transparent. We organized the programs around the openness of the activities in order to set up the interior life of the building. It works as an interior street interacting with the landscape.

A low volume, designed with high mineral register covers, appears as a large functional unifying roof, which protects and covers spaces dedicated to the public. This mineral volume offers an architectural coherence between contemporary and traditional.

As a genuine scenographic toolbox, the new concert hall is a project both modern and traditional which will provide a brand-new landmark for the city’s culture. Our main focus is to provide a suitable and flexible scenographic spaces to host major events. The building is composed around a communal foyer which offers to the public a continuum of public spaces from inside to outside. From this central place, heart of the building, the public can have access to the ticket offices and loackrooms.

We took a special care in this project to light up curiosity and desire to public around shared spaces in order to promote social and cultural activities. Giving a living space is guiding users towards the discovery of their direct surroundings and the people around them. Our aim is to provide a caring and protective environment for all kinds of Art.

To ease the maintenance, we decide to limit the access to public to only one level. This choice allows the building to be compact and economical. We took a special care of optimizing the number of circulations, avoiding superfluous, in order to generate gorgeous and generous open spaces.

For the 1,500-seat auditorium, we propose a classical and luxurious design for a philharmonic hall dedicated mainly to music without a stage cage. It is a room with public distributed around the stage with orchestra pit and proscenium. The second concert hall proposes an enlarge central space to maximize possibility and flexibility of use.

The architecture of both rooms offers each a unique and collective personal experience. As the audience is not only in a frontal relationship, this strengthens this idea of collective experience. Each viewer sees and hears from a different point of view in the room.

The overall form of the building, the functional organization and the envelope develop around three architectural register, shape the design of our proposal. We worked on a pragmatic organization based on the welcoming and the well-feeling of the public, artists and technicians. We took a special care into promoting the working conditions of the staff, exchanges, conviviality and demonstrating audiences without mixing flows.

The vertical separation of uses ease the understanding of the building in order to avoid the mixing of flows while maximizing the possibility of pooling the programs of the both rooms.

Technical spaces, delivery and circulation areas are designed around a major concern for functionality, comfort and celerity of the decors movements.

The Kaunas M.K. CIURLIONIS Concert Centre is a landscape building that dialogues and play with its site. The horizontal shape allows the building to be compact, sustainable and well oriented.

The green roof offers a significant inertia to the building and to maintain pleasant views from the surrounding buildings. It is a true fifth façade.
We have put in place a compact building so that the new hall concert can be integrated in its urban environment.
The roofing is a major active element of the project which also hosts photovoltaic panels and allows natural ventilation in summer.

The project has been designed according to a global thinking integrating implantation, form, operating cost and materials. We will minimize the verses of simple and effective principles.
