Erläuterungstext

MCN will be one of the architectural symbols of the city, as a showcase model building designed, constructed and operated in accordance with the principles of environmentally friendly and sustainable development.
The architecture of the MCN building is grounded in the cultural, site and landscape conditions of the surrounding area. The main reference are: the Polish Aviation Museum, the Cultural Aviation Park and, above all, the protected historical components of the Rakowice-Czyżyny airport.
The structure of the building, as well as its layout are based on one very distinctive spatial element - the existing runway of the former airport.
The parkland character dominating in the surrounding area was an impulse to shape the MCN area as an element which is strongly integrated with the landscape, blurring the boundary between the building and the museums and cultural parks surrounding it.
The dominant was designed on the north side. In the south the building opens to the park area, and gently “slopes downward” towards the runway. The roof is a tribune, and the runway is the stage. The stage is used to hold air shows, outdoor events, scientific experiments and other events related to the activities of the museum and the designed MCN.
The new MCN structure neither competes with the built up area of the Polish Aviation Museum, nor does it dominate in the space of the cultural park, and despite this it manages to emphasise its independence and separation from the entire urban context and landscape.
The goal was to establish a distinctive, unique architectural form, which would itself become the symbol and signature of MCN and constitute a characteristic component of the architectural landscape of Lesser Poland.
The requirement to preserve an appropriate transitional plane from the runway was taken into account when shaping the structure with variable roof height. MCN rises from the runway area to the northeast, it is encapsulated in the outline of a triangle, symbolising “science”.
The individual elements of the building reflect its functional zones, taking into account internal interconnections and organisation, and also integrating the building interior with its exterior.
The designed building was immersed in the existing terrain, which is also important for the energy concept of the building. The building structure is characterised by variable levels, heights and sizes of the individual spaces.
The spatial design of the interiors and the development of the surrounding areas are conducive to establishing common working, learning and relaxation areas, as well as expressing the creativity of external and internal users.
The architecture of MCN harmonises with the museum area in terms of composition and landscape, while it meets all functional and spatial requirements of the investment project, and also respects and emphasises the historical and cultural value of the area, ensuring a clear spatial and functional layout.
