National Memorial to the Heavenly Hundred Heroes and Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv - Nomination 1 - Memorial

I. Concept

The Unifying Band

- offers niches for commemoration and sets up light points of hope
- forms a shining band accompanying the way in a new age

Path of Liberation

- a fateful path becomes a public stage
- it is accompanied by the shadows of the deceased
- they mourn their loss and appreciate their aims
- a path of grief and confidence


II. Introduction

The design is characterized by architectonical objectivity and artistic clarity. The confusing diversity of topographical and plastic elements is opposed by linearly arranging axes and a spacious, extensive surface design.

While the Stele of Independence rises more than 60 m into the sky, the first glance to the National Memorial to the Heavenly Hundreds is firmly bound to the ground of Maidan - from where the uprising started. A surprising but nevertheless meaningful contrast.

Only after the viewer has entered the newly designed alley he experiences the suggestive impact of its shadow characters. Confronted by the shadow of the past, he is involved in the history, he shall participate in the prospective power of this way.

It was an essential design idea to create a space scenario by artistic-architectonic means, which makes also future generation aware of the dynamics of the revolutionary movement. For freedom and self-determination have to be fight for again and again in a democratic attitude.


III. Memorial Wall

The Alley of Heavenly Hundred Heroes is flanked to the north by an approx. 200 m long memorial wall. It begins at the low situated Maidan Information Center (a structural connection would be desirable) with a height of 6 m, and ends at the Revolution of Dignity Museum. At the staircase to the International Center of Culture and Arts, it has a height of just approx. 1.5 m - this height is maintained up to the end.

150 illuminated wall niches of varying size shall be provided in the wall made of light, high-quality exposed concrete. The medium-sized niches are reserved for the commemoration of the 107 killed sons and daughters of liberty. They shall become the permanent location of their memorial plaques, candles and flower decoration.

Additional niches shall be provided for all the people all over the world who shared the spirit of this freedom movement, support and preserve it for the future.
Individual artefacts can also be permanently or temporarily integrated there.

The different openings and their multifarious relations stand for the searching, finding, merging and growing of new structures. In their community, the individual parts form a strong whole. The diversity of the citizens' commitment merges in the Memorial Wall and forms an impressive band of solidarity.

At night, too, the light points interweave to a dynamic network.
The shining band blaze the trail to a new era.


IV. Shadow characters

The newly designed Alley of Heavenly Hundred Heroes can be recognized from far already by its large-size, dark shadow characters against the light background. Visibility significantly benefits from the steeply rising topography.

More than one hundred different shadow characters are inserted in the ground between the Maidan Information Center and the Revolution of Dignity Museum. Its length varies between 6 and 10 m. The high-quality paving consists of blast, almost white and black concrete blocks (alternatively granite), cut and placed according to specified patterns. The planting to the north is dispensed with in favour of the Memorial Wall - but the southern tree alley shall be maintained and forms the necessary southern boundary of the alley.

One hundred and seven seemingly floating shadows stand for the tragic loss of Heavenly Hundred Heroes. They are permanently inscribed in the historic site and remind of their tragic struggle for freedom and democracy - as shadow that will stay, as appeal that will never fade.

On the graphically designed total area of 6,200 square metres (worldwide visible at Google Earth), the citizens become part of the design themselves, and so part of the history.
The irritating moment: when on sunny days the own shadow crosses the shadow characters in the pavement, the personal reflection of the viewer is challenged in a very special way.
This does not happen always, in each case different (different hour, different sun position), but certainly new again and again.

The - actually impossible - shadow direction south-east is reasoned by the orientation of the Alley of Heavenly Hundred Heroes at its distinctive starting point at the Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square. This orientation is constantly maintained, to achieve the impression of a past, historic time.

In consequence, the shadow characters at the level of the Hotel Ukraine run obliquely to the road axis. The hard shadows of the pedestrians occurring during sunshine will superimpose and interlace with the designed ground shadows at every time of the day.

Such imaginary displacements of time and space intensify the participative layout character of the design idea and increase the attractiveness of the newly designed alley.


IV. Conclusion

A stage for the citizens shall be provided where the uprising from below started.

The National Memorial is not only a memorial but also a place of living democracy.
It brings together the emotions of the affected, the interests of the citizens and the challenges of the city, and gives them a spacious urban frame.
Its modern design shall be cross-generational and future-oriented.

The Alley of Heavenly Hundred Heroes is a lively place, mourning the victims in the middle of life, and reminding of the power of civil liberty.

II. Вступ

Дизайн характерезується архітектурною простотою та художньою чіткістю. В умовах заплутаного різноманіття топографічних і пластичних елементів великомасштабний дизайн поверхні впорядковується завдяки лінеарнім осям та встановлює широку простору зону.

Поки Монумент Незалежності заввишки більше 60 м здіймaється високо в небо, перший погляд на Національний Меморіал Небесної Сотні залишається міцно прикутий до Майдану - з точки зору подій Революції Гідності. Несподіваний та дивовижний, але у той же час змістовний контраст.

Глядач відчуває сугестивний ефект їхніх тіньових символів лише увійшовши в новозведену Алею Героїв. Зіткнувшись із тінями минулого, глядач повністю понурюється в історію, він повинен брати участь у перспективній силі цього шляху. Важливою конструктивною ідеєю було використання художньо-архітектурних засобів для понурення споглядача у сценарій, який відтворює динаміку революційного руху також і для наступних поколінь. Так як для свободи і самовизначення треба перемагати знову і знову в демократичному сенсі.

III. Mеморіальна стіна

Алея Героїв Небесної Сотні оточена з півночі меморіальнoю стінoю довжиною 200 метрів. Вона починається на низькому інформаційному центрі Майданa висотою в 6 м і закінчується Музеєм pеволюційної Гідності. На в'їзді до Міжнародного центру культури і мистецтвa її висота близько 1,5 м - ця висота продовжується до кінця стіни.

Mеморіальна cтіна, виготовлена з легкого, високоякісного світлого бетону, має близько 150 освітлених стінних ніш різних розмірів. Середні ніші призначені для пам'яті 107 загиблих синів та дочок свободи. Їх меморіальні дощечки, свічки та квіткові композиції знаходять тут своє постійне місце.

Подальші ніші передбачені для всіх тих, хто має дух цього визвольного руху по всьому світу, щоб підтримати його і захистити в майбутньому. Навіть окремі артефакти можуть бути постійно чи тимчасово там інтегровані.

Різні за розміром та відносним мезі собою розташуванням ніші відображають пошук, знаходження, створення та розвиток нових структур. У їхньому союзі окремі частини формують єдине ціле. Різноманітність громадянської участі зустрічається на Меморіальній стіні та утворює значний зв'язок солідарності.
Навіть вночі точки світла переплітаються в динамічне мереживо. Світлова група знаменує шлях до нової епохи.

IV.Tіньові персонажі

По новому збудована Алея Героїв Небесної Сотні, з її величними темними тінями на світлому тлі, може бути впізнана з відстані як місце пам'яті. Наочність тіньових персонажів сприяє сильно зростаючої топографії.

Понад сто різних силуетів вкладених на поверхню Алеї між інформаційним центром Майдану та музеєм Революції Гідності. Їх довжина становить від 6 до 10 м кожний. Високоякісне покриття складається з вибитих, майже білих і чорних бетонних плит (альтернатива граніту), які вирізані та прокладені відповідно до заздалегідь визначених малюнків. Північну алею дерев доведеться перенести на інше місце (видалити) на користь Меморіальної стіни - південна алея дерев залишається недоторканою і утворює необхідну південну межу проспекту.

107 ніби плаваючіx тіней символізують трагічну втрату Героїв Небесної Сотні. Вони постійно вписані в історію і нагадують про свою трагічну боротьбу за свободу та демократію - де тінь залишається, як звернення, яке ніколи не зникає.

На загальній графічно оформленій площі 6200 квадратних метрів (доступні через Google Earth в усьому світі) самі громадяни стануть частиною дизайну і таким чином, частиною сучасної історії. Збуджуючий момент: коли в сонячні дні власна тінь людини перетинається з тінями в покритті підлоги, тоді особисте відображення глядача кидається в очі, викликає глибокі почуття та дивує особливим чином.
Це відбувається не завжди однаково, кожного разу по-різному (різний час, різне розташування сонця) але, звичайно, знову і знову та по-новому.

Насправді ледве виразний курс напрямку тіньових персонажів на південний схід обумовлений вирівнюванням Алеї Небесної Сотні на її неповторний, первинний пункт на Майдані Незалежності. Цей напрямок тримається постійно, тому і виникає враження минулого, історичного часу.

Як наслідок, тіньові зображення розташовані за напрямком осі шляху героїв, який знаходиться навскіс відносно до готелю Україна. Тіні пішоходів від сонячного світлa та світлa ліхтарів накладаються і переплітаються із тінями на землі в будь-яку добу.
Такі уявні зрушення часy та просторy підсилюють характер дизайнерського завзяття, дизайнерської ідеї та підвищують привабливість новоствореної Алеї.

V. Bисновок

Tам, де почалося народне протистояння, потрібно встановити меморіал для пам'яті громадян.

Національний меморіал - це не лише меморіал, а й місце народження та життя демократії. Це об'єднує емоції потерпілих, інтереси громадян, а також задовольняє потреби міста та надає йому щедру структуру архітектурно-міського планування.
Сучасний дизайн повинен прокладати зв'язок між поколіннями та тенденціями.

Алея Героїв Небесної Сотні - це місце пережиття трагічних подій знову і знову, a також вшанування пам'яті жертв і нагадування про силу громадської волі та свободи.
