Erläuterungstext

The project of the Verdant Vein locates in the southeast of Buffalo City. As part of the Buffalo River Corridor Brownfield Opportunity Area, the site mainly contains the derelict railway. In 19th century, a legacy from the industries bloomed the transportation in Buffalo. However, the Great Depression have resulted in the rapid industrial decline and the abandoned railway. Today, this 1.5-mile DL&W rail corridor tied the neighborhoods of Perry, Old First Ward and Valley, with the history and regional culture. The Verdant Vein aims to transfer the industrial brownfield into dynamic zone according to the BOA strategy and enhance the city identity by connecting with the Olmsted Park System through proposed green ways.
According to the history and existing challenges of this site, this project has three strategies. Firstly, enhancing the cultural identity and increasing the sense of belonging for the local neighborhood. Secondly, engaging local community to satisfy the demand of public use creating new programs. Thirdly, improving the connectivity in the large scale-the green system of the buffalo city, and the small scale-breaking the boundary of the blocks and connecting neighborhood.
Redevelopment of this area will be based on its strategic location and surrounding context, which includes derelict railway, Riverwork community center, local neighborhoods, and the Buffalo Riverfront area. The entire corridor is divided into three redevelopment zones followed with corresponding strategies. The first zone starts from the southwest area defined as the urban corner due to the spatial connection with Riverwork and downtown. In this zone, welcome plaza and sports court invites people from outside of communities to share this vibrant belt. Majority of second zone is engaging local community with a variety of activities, quiet gathering spaces and an elegant garden. The third zone is embedded in the Red Jacket River Front Park and linking with the Buffalo River, which creates a natural harmony between wildlife and human being. With the respect to the site and the goal of emphasizing the history aspect, a consistent trail system connects different blocks and zones, building on the existing old rail berms. The networks of blocks are connected through pedestrian paths and bike trails, providing unique experiences for both the residences and the tourists, in which the difference of public and private becomes ambiguous in the field of landscapes. Proposing pedestrian bridges are designed to separate slow speed traffic, bike and pedestrian, from high speed road, allow residents and the tourists enjoy different experiences while ensuring their safe.
