Erläuterungstext
Our research on important inventions in the Croatian history and cultural life brought up that the first parachute was invented in 1595 by the Croatian scientist and philosopher Faust Vrancic, who named its invention Homo Volans (Flying Man).
Twenty years later, he even implemented his design and tested the parachute by jumping from a clock tower in Venice in 1617.
Already in 1483 Leonardo da Vinci sketched a parachute while he was living in Milan around 1480-1483: a pyramid-shaped canopy held open by a square wooden frame.
Vrancic had examined Leonardo da Vinci\'s rough sketches of a parachute, and set out to implement a parachute of his own.
A now-famous sketch of a parachute that he dubbed Homo Volans appeared in the aforementioned book.
Faust Vrancic (born 1551, Ĺ ibenik) was a Croatian humanist, philosopher, historian, diplomat, linguist, lexicographer, and inventor.
Vrancic’s book on mechanics, Machinae Novae (Venice 1595), contained 40 large pictures depicting 56 different machines, devices, and technical concepts. What makes him one of Croatia’s most important scientists.
Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht
The project has clear and simple design with exiting spatial qualities for the departing passengers. However the proportions of the central building hinder good commercial areas, the integration of the baggage handling system and the efficient capability to expand.
Compact solution, although parachute symbol is not completely illustrated. Central area is high, but also shallow. Entrance into air bridges/aircraft is problematic. It is classical solution without many challenges. From the point of view of technology and energy it is a qualitative design.
Passenger flows
General data: proposal with three technological levels + baggage sorting system in basement. Passenger flows: up to two changes of levels, down. Several changes in direction of departure flows for remote positions. Unclean passenger: solution for unclean passenger provided.
Flexibility and expandability: proposal meets demand. Proposal is close to the Programme.
Energetic concept, economic efficiency
General principles described, ground energy & PV use, no solar col., all technologies possible to apply, 220 kWh/m2a still mid range, energy suply system not elaborated but possible
Energy performance
The concept of the building surfaces includes glazed facade and transparent roofing membrane structure with integrated PV system and double-sided PTFE coating (material quality according to Eurocodes and DIN). The roofing membrane is double, translucency 15%, lower membrane with low-emittance (Low-E) coating. The glazed facade is retracted into the corpus and is, thus, in shadow. In general concept of energy efficiency the solar shading devices are being mentioned without specifying their types or positions.
Structural concept
The structure concept is taking full advantage of rational steel structure and membrane providing open plan for flexibile use of space. The lightweight simple structure enables a good resistance to seismic effects.
