Erläuterungstext

City Nord is extraordinarily consequent in its design, following the modernist ideal of a „green“ business town, made up of solitary building blocks framed by landscaped surroundings.

Creating an address – creating identity
Parks and precincts should be identifiable by their own characteristic design. The designations „central zone“ or „central public park“ alone sound both buerocratic and unspecific.

The solitary blocks are well complemented by a coherent design of „flowing“ outdoor spaces. The „central park“ requires an overall restructuring and a strong design in order to become an attractive, appealing space.

The highlight will be a sheet of water fed by precipitation, a main asset to the recreational quality of the park.

Creating spaces – redesigning the topography
Existing earthmass will be removed which currently obscures the experience of spatial sequence, and new vistas are created. The design adapts landscape features found in the surroundings of Hamburg – dips, ditches, pollarded willows and more – and creates spatial units with various vistas. The outdoor design is drawn as close to the buildings as possible. This landscape forms the basis on which is placed the structure of the solitary buildings.

The Promenade
The central promenade forms the spine of the park. Bridges and precincts divide into units and accentuate the space. Made up of a sequence of precincts and paths, the promenade becomes the main area for rest in the park. The central part turns into a boulevard in front of the formal front gardens of the central zone and opens vistas onto the landscape scenery of the park.

Creating meeting points
At the vertical intersections of the park, intensively designed areas will emerge providing specific functions. Small precincts will accommodate kiosks, small fountains, beer gardens, art, venues for business events, and so on.

At Ăśberseering, the precincts could also accommodate functional units with telephone and internet access, bus stops and advertising (sponsoring).
