Erläuterungstext
The bullring of Granada, formerly situated outside the city gates, is found today right in the middle of a residential area as a result of the city’s growth.
Our competition entry took up the style of the historic building and its construction technique from the beginning of the 19th century.
By implementing characteristic but simple measures for dealing with the built volumes, by heightening the given situation, by topographic differentiation and the careful choice of materials and plants, a project was realised which succeeds to integrate the building into the adjacent urban fabric and was also cheap to build.
The boundaries of the square are defined by levelling the formerly sloping surface.
The resulting different levels are connected by flights of steps.
The dominant circular volume of the arena is hence placed on a virtually square tableau, an impression that is supported by the grids of the stone setts and the trees.
The open space design of the bullring was one of our most important projects in Spain, showing both the design language of our practice at the beginning of the 1990’s and our approach towards working in the context of historic volumes.
The experience we gained in this project also became the basis for work to come in Berlin; for example when we co-operated for an entry to the first competition for the Berlin Lustgarten, and for our projects planned or realised in Wasserstadt Spandau.

Client: Ayuntamiento de Granada
