Erläuterungstext

As a consequence of widening Daumstrasse into a main access point and artery in the eastern part of the ambitious Wasserstadt project, a noise reduction barrier was needed in the existing urban development. Engineers working on the avenue had made a proposal based on current models similar to construction projects outside the urban space. Since we had already worked on Krienicke Park in the same area, the Wasserstadt group asked us to make a proposal adapted to the specific site. We complied and our finished project was granted the Renault Traffic Design Award in 2001 for its unique character.

In large part, our design was determined by the varying widths available for construction along the route. Where space was sufficiently wide, we placed a simple dike planted with wild roses. In the intermediate areas, we used reinforced earth. Finally, the barrier in the narrowest parts was made of angled 6 millimetre thick Corten steel panels, a material chosen to reflect the area’s industrial past. At the widest point, where the streets intersect the dikes under the shade of four chestnut trees from India, it is possible to climb the barrier to a small scenic overlook that establishes a visual relationship with the future Grützmacher Park opposite. As a contrasting element, we planted a row of Populus nigra ‘Italica’, their usual tall, upright forms contrasting with the horizontal construction. Combining these different elements shapes a sequence with a much freer and more varied silhouette than in any common noise barrier.

The project shows how a construction for noise reduction can be designed architectonically without exceeding the cost of a comparable construction made from prefabricated components.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

„The noise protection barrier in Berlin-Spandau is unusual in more than one respect: even before the upgrading of an inner-city street designated for a four-lane extension to connect Wasserstadt Spandau, a noise protection project was implemented... The simplicity of the construction is outstanding as much as its individual character. The panel was well convinced of this low-cost alternative to a prefabricated construction, which often forms an alien element in an urban space. The crude steel sheeting sets a self-confident signal impossible to destroy even by vandalism.“
