Erläuterungstext

The new neighbourhood of the Pulmermühle Wasserstadt in Berlin’s Spandau district takes its name from the old gunpowder mills that were used in the Prussian and German wars before the Second World War. The site of the neighbourhood lies within the fortress located on Spandau Lake where the Lilli Palmer Promenade now forms the boundary between the urban area and the river.

The statutory development plan defined the area of the park as a semi-natural public park.
Therefore, the design language needed to integrate both the natural elements of the riverside and demands for recreational use. Additionally, the shores, in what is a quite hermetic environment, had developed some unique vegetation, which had to be protected at the same time that the needs of the new inhabitants were met.

Krienicke Park represents the natural landscape of the area of the Havel River. Bearing this in mind, the flat surface (a requisite of its earlier industrial use) was converted into a lightly rolling landscape. Arranging existing trees -- species adapted to the area -- in groups or complementing them with newly planted trees created a park, which showed itself to be a consolidated space on the very first day that it opened to the public. Parallel to the shore, a footpath with wooden walkways and bridges connects different points of interest, such as a small beach, a pergola and a jetty.

A wide lawn, gently sloping and structured by groups of trees, forms the largest part of the park, inviting its guests to relax and pursue various leisure activities. This area is demarked by a granite wall that acts as linear street furniture and separates the lawn from the walkway.

This combination of an animated topography and the careful rearrangement of existing trees, together with the addition of linear and punctual structural components, generated a design that breathes both tranquillity and naturalness.

By relying on the existing qualities and potentials of the site, it was possible to remain far under the set budget.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

“The aim of Häfner / Jiménez landscape architects to continue the tradition of Lenné’s Havel parks has been achieved in an up-to-date manner. Existing elements and vistas are put into scene unobtrusively, with skilful assistance to natural circumstances. This example shows that free use of form does not necessarily equal arbitrariness. All in all, Krienicke Park is an entire success.”
