New Holland Island is envisaged as a center for new contemporary culture in St Petersburg. We propose a strategy for evolutionary growth by staging temporary exhibitions and events to initiate the cultural program on this vast historic site. This experimental program will establish New Holland as a vivid, unique, contemporary cultural destination.
Following this evolutionary strategy the historic structures will be respectfully restored through step-by-step interventions and adjustments. Each space can evolve through a series of ‘upgrades’: from temporary gallery to shop, from artist’s studio to penthouse, etc.
A single new building completes the circle and relates to the surrounding city in height and volume. It adds a large space for events and desired programmatic elements that do not fit in the existing buildings. In addition, it contains a collection of ‘Activators’: temporary structures envisaged as art pieces that interact with the island and transform the site into a performance area. It turns New Holland Island into a curatable space.
In summer the site will be full of life as each activator hosts its own art events, theater shows and restaurants. In winter, they create an indoor labyrinth of wonderful spaces and multiple activities.
From now on, New Holland Island will be an integral part of the city, its culture and its population.
