Erläuterungstext

Skärscape
Nynäshamn and its surrounding coastal landscape are part of the Stockholms skärgård. Since the last ice age, different processes of landscape forming like carving, shifting, elevation and erosion created the skärgård landscape with approximately 25 000 islands. Its a multiple coded open space used by residents and tourists which also works as an ecological resource to the greater area.

In Nynäshamn, the spatial emptiness of the site and a lack of defined programme are the ´calm´ potentials. It still remains an area where the city is cut off and the landscape of the Skärgård comes flowing in. This is the starting point for a merging of the regional landscape with local open space structures. The principles of form and usage of the Skärgård region were reinterpreted into the local site in Nynäshamn. Form and structure genesis got set, before the programme was defined (Form to programme, Rhowbotham, 1995).
Artificial ´Distortions´ and ´Scars´ in the ground surface formulate a subtle and at the same time strong park network. Pathes following the main sliced lines create a network along the edge of the area. A new pedestrian bridge links the northern and southern part of Nynäshamn following Estögangen.
A dense composition of ecological areas and multiple sport and leisure activities are generated and stimulated. Seasonal flooding of the area could be regulated by a central park meadow that is lowered for about 50cm and which is used as a drainage sink.
Through densification of existing landscape qualities and the qualification for differentiated possible uses and multiple connections to the surrounding structures, Skärscape becomes the central link in the wider city and open space context.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

The jury rewarded the restrained and unprogrammed nature of this proposal, beautifully represented in a way that suggested a characterful landscape, but that did not prescribe too much about what might happen there.

The result was a proposal that is a stylised meditation on the Swedish landscape, that resists imposing arbitrary, ‘friendly’ landscape features. It also appears very realisable in terms of scale and form.

The project took seriously the character of what was already there on the site, reinforcing it and slightly sharpening the edges. While the theoretical motivations of the landscape “cuts” were a little obscure, the jury enjoyed how the approach became a design tool that could potentially accommodate the changing needs of the site and brief. There are aspects of the future of this landscape that no project solved, but Skärscape has the most potential to adapt to those requirements.

The jury felt that there was something elegant about the proposal that grows on the observer. This project embraced the emptiness of the landscape, gave it a sense of generosity and created an atmosphere that suggested a calm, recreational mood. It treated the entire landscape as a design project, and used highly architectural means to create this mood. This is a project that dares not to build, if you like: it trusts the power of a confident landscape design.
