Erläuterungstext

This masterplan proposes organising the site in terraces following the formal language of the landscape. The contours are structured to be recognisable yet follow the natural points of the site. It is an adaptable concept in that the precise geometry of the contours can adapt as circumstances change yet the overall coherence of the site remains.

The first phase is simply organised in a generally single storey building that follows the contour line at the top of the site.

The landscape of Palestine has been informed by both the natural landscape and its native plants but also by a cultural landscape that is derived from plants and traditions that are not necessarily native to the region but have become embedded in and contributed to the regional culture.
As Palestine has been at the crossroads of so many important trade routes, it has been influenced by many diverse cultures. The story of these influences can be seen in the landscape.

It is proposed is to use the themes of the “cultural landscape” and the “natural landscape” to create a narrative landscape for the museum.

The landscape is formed through a series of cascading terraces, created by field stone walls which recall the agricultural terraces of the area.

The theme of the landscape, from the cultural to the native landscape, unfolds across the terraces with the more cultured and domesticated terraces close to the building, the planting changes gradually as one moves down the terraces to the west.
