Erläuterungstext

Tori - The Square
A new museum building on cape Katajanokka together with the new office quarter in front of the Tähtitorninvuori hill creates a bigger spatial entity - sea square.
The historical Market Square will be rearranged into a miniature city with its quarters.
A new hotel building will function as a bridge connecting the seafront to Tähtitorninvuori hill.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

From the Jury report:
Tori
The entry includes valuable new ideas for the development of the area. There is a great framed large-scale landscape around the Market Square. The entry takes into consideration the urban context and its cultural and historical values and the block masses feel especially “Helsinki-like”. The bulky building masses on the Tähtitorninvuori side require further nuance, though. The bridge building connecting to Tähtitorninvuori is grand nevertheless. The idea of rearranging the marketplace is interesting.
Many experiences made possible by the scheme would be inspirational. Existing parks are nicely interpreted in a modern way at the waterfront.
The room programme is realised with a suitable quantity and without mistakes considering, for example, public building and studies of additional building possibilities. The traffic scheme is well studied and functioning, based on the present
street network, except the elongated deck from the Olympia Terminal towards north. Some of the traffic areas and structures are visually too powerful in the environment and thus compromise the quality of the pedestrian and cyclist experience. Port activities,
including the car traffic, are not shown with an adequate amount of information. It would be easy to build the scheme in stages. The scheme seems economical considering resources.
