Erläuterungstext
The grand urban space of the South Harbour is complemented by smaller spaces of human scale. They are in a natural way integrated in the overall urban structure and create for the pedestrian a continuum of different experiences of urban culture.
The experience of the harbour basin is emphasized by both bringing the viewer closer to the water by terraced piers and also lifting the pedestrian walk 4-5 meters above the quay in order to get a sharper and more interesting view of the urban space and its happenings.
The new buildings are given a scale with regards to the hierarchy offered by the historical setting. The Market Square remains an open space, the scene of hundreds of years as an urban scene.
