Der neue Bahnhof Susa International kreuzt kurz nach Verlassen des neuen Mont-Cenis-Basistunnels die Altbaustrecke. Die Bündelung der Hochgeschwindigkeitstrasse mit der Autobahn als gemeinsamen Korridor bietet die Möglichkeit, die maßstablosen Infrastrukturen, die im Zuge des Autobahnbaus erstellt wurden, zu beseitigen.
Großmaßstäbliche Bauten im Susatal zeichnen sich – bedingt durch ihre geografische Lage – durch über Jahrhunderte dokumentierte militärische Befestigungsanlagen aus. Diese beeindrucken durch ihre in die Landschaft integrierte, gestaltete Topografie.
So ist auch der neue Bahnhof in die umgebende Landschaft integriert: Die klare und einfach ablesbare Geometrie der hellen, hölzernen Dachstruktur, die sich aus der Geometrie der Eisenbahnen ergibt, steht dabei im Kontrast zum topografischen Spiel der Landschaft.
Die vier Hauptrichtungen der windmühlenartigen inneren Organisation öffnet den Blick in die imposante Landschaft: vom Hauteingang in Richtung Susa auf die stolze Silhouette der hohen Berggipfel, nach Süden, vom Wartebereich des Fernbahnhofs auf die „tre piloni“, nach Osten bis zum Taleingang auf die Sacra di S.Michele und nach Norden auf den Gipfel des Roccia Melone.
Die helle, hölzerne und rhomboid kassettierte Struktur des Daches bildet einen stofflichen und geometrischen Kontrast zur Landschaft der steinernen Volumen im Inneren. Zusätzliche Oberlichter und ein Farbspiel in den Kassetten bilden die innere Bewegungsstruktur der Nutzer ab und fangen mit ihrem heiteren Licht- und Farbspiel die tages- und jahreszeitlichen Lichtstimmungen ein.
Das Dach, als weithin sichtbare fünfte Fassade, zeichnet sich inmitten des grünen Tales durch sein glänzendes Metallgewebe aus, welches durch das Spiel der Oberlichter die innere Organisation des Bahnhofs tagsüber und nachts widerspiegelt.

Susa international railway station, Italy
Shortly after leaving the new Mont Cenis base tunnel, the new Susa international railway station crosses over the existing track. Routing the high-speed line together with the motorway in a joint corridor offers the opportunity to address the lack of scale of the infrastructure, which was created as part of the motorway construction.
Due to its geographic location, the Susa valley has – for many centuries – been used for military fortifications, which is something that the design of any large-scale structure would have to take into account. These fortifications impress in the way that they are integrated into the topography of the valley.
The new railway station has been integrated into the surrounding landscape in the same manner: the straightforward and easily interpreted geometry of the light colour of the timber roof structure, which results from the railway geometry, contrasts with the topographical play of the landscape.
The four main directions of the inner windmill-shaped layout open up the view to the imposing landscape: from the main entrance towards Susa to the proud skyline of the high mountain tops; towards the south from the waiting area of the main-line railway station to the “tre piloni”; to the east to the entrance of the valley to Sacra di San Michele and to the north to the peak of Roccia Melone.
On the inside, the light-coloured timber structure of the roof, with its rhomboid cassette shapes, forms a material and geometric contrast to the landscape with its large rock formations. Additional roof lights create a play of colours in the cassettes and reflect some of the movements of the station users and, with the cheerful play of light and colour, capture the mood of the day and season.
The roof appears as a fifth façade that can be seen from afar in the midst of the green valley, its shiny metal fabric reflecting the inner organisation of the station during day and night with the play of light from the roof lights.
