Erläuterungstext

The brief of the competition called for a 80.000 seat stadium able to host football, Olympic games, rugby as well as cultural events in the historical Meiji Jingu Gaien sports park in the Shinjuku district. The underlying idea of the design is that the stadium is not understood as a mere building but as an active part of the landscape merging with its surrounding and connecting the green areas of Tokyo into a large scale urban park. The Stadium seeks for unity and harmony with its surroundings with the roof being designed as an accessible surface growing out of the landscape plaza, with all the major functions integrated in the greened platform. The sustainability strategy further integrates solar energy and geothermal systems whereas the soft geometry enables optimized windshield
factor and the use of natural ventilation.
