Das neue Medizinische ForschungsCentrum des Universitätsklinikums Münster MedForCe bildet den zentralen Standort für die Institute für Mikrobiologie und Hygiene und wird darüberhinaus weitere, umfangreiche Forschungsflächen der Medizinischen Fakultät beherbergen.
Der Neubau bildet den nordöstlichen Abschluss des Klinikareals und ist im südlichen Bereich an die zukünftige Campusmagistrale angebunden. Er setzt sich aus zwei, ineinandergreifenden, ringförmigen Teilkomplexen zusammen, die jeweils einen vom Vorplatz zugänglichen Innenhof umschließen. Diese Teilung weist auf eine klare Trennung zwischen den Forschungsflächen im nördlichen und dem Zentrum für medizinische Mikrobiologie und Hygiene im südlichen Gebäudeteil hin. Die „Schnittmenge“ bildet das in der Mitte liegende, gemeinsame Foyer, das gleichzeitig als kommunikatives Zentrum beider Bereiche fungiert. Es ermöglicht den Zugang von zwei Seiten, wodurch das Gebäude sowohl der Stadt, als auch dem Klinikum zugewandt ist. Als weiträumiger Luftraum angelegt, erzeugt es im Erdgeschoss eine großzügige, flächenübergreifende Eingangsituation. Die darüber auskragenden, solitären Seminar-, Besprechnungs- und Aufenthaltsräume sind auf den ersten beiden Obergeschossen über emporenartige Brücken zu erschließen, die die offene Raumwirkung unterstützen und vielfältige Sichtkontakte zwischen den einzelnen Ebenen und dem darunterliegenden Foyer zulassen. Aus dieser Mitte heraus sind alle Forschungsbereiche und Büroräume ringförmig, entsprechend der Gebäudetypologie angelegt. Ihre Raumaufteilung kann flexibel an die jeweiligen Arbeitsabläufe angepasst werden. Zusätzliche, vorerst ungenutzte Versorgungsschächte erlauben eine spätere Nachrüstung und technische Anbindung nahezu aller Bereiche im Gebäude.
Die Gebäudehülle ist als horizontal gegliederte Lochfassade ausgebildet und zitiert durch die konsequente Kombination aus Beton und Ziegel die umliegende Architektursprache. Durchgehende Fensterlemente mit filigranen Laibungen aus Beton dominieren die Fassade der Labor- und Bürobereiche, während die Eingangszonen in der Mitte des Komplexes zu beiden Innenhöfen hin verglast sind.

MedForCe, the new medical research center of Münster‘s University Hospital, is the main facility for the Institute for Microbiology and Hygiene and will contain a wide range of other research facilities for the medical faculty.
The new building defines the north-eastern edge of the medical faculty site and its southern end is connected to the main axis of the planned campus. It comprises two interlocking, annular complexes, each surrounding an interior courtyard accessible from a forecourt. This arrangement provides a clear division between the research areas in the northern part and the Center for medical Microbiology and Hygiene in the southern part of the building. In the middle, the „intersection“ creates the shared foyer which also functions as a communicative hub for both parts. Allowing access from both sides, the building faces the hospital and the city. Designed as a generous space, it creates an expansive entrance feature for many areas of the facility. The stand-alone, cantilevering seminar, conference and lounge rooms are connected on the first two floors by gallery-like bridges, which reinforce the open space effect and permit visual contact between the various levels and the foyer below. Research areas and offices are arranged in rings radiating out from the centre in accordance to the building typology. The room layouts are flexible, allowing them to be changed to suit methods of working. Additional unused services shafts allow retrofitting of equipment and linking of technical services in almost all areas of the building at any time in the future.
The building skin is a horizontally divided perforated facade and adopts the language of the surrounding architecture, largely due to its consistent combination of concrete and brick. Continuous window elements with ultra-slender, concrete reveals dominate the facade of the laboratory and office areas, while the entrance area in the middle of the complex is glazed on the sides facing the internal courtyards.
