Erläuterungstext

In addressing the design for the new hospital we have made a deliberate effort to plan the building as a simple series of clearly expressed forms and spaces. The aim is to achieve a building which is not only legible, but derives much of its architectural quality from the careful consideration and detailing of juxtaposed elements. This includes the new with the old. The nature of the park and the low heights of the existing buildings gives a unique and pleasant air to the institute and is highly positive for the therapy of neurological patients. The image of the new building endeavours to integrate with its surroundings by avoiding an excessively tall or large building which could be potentially damaging for the balance between building and landscape. The project seeks, by a considered incorporation of the older buildings, to change their nature and reverse existing patterns of use with a new entrance block and a sweep of treatment rooms around a new garden on the north, putting nature at the centre of recovery.

One of the main design features of the building is the creation of the new « hospital street » which by way of a naturally illuminated glazed concourse joins all of the dots of the functions of the building : linking the therapy block and bed levels with the main entrance, consultations, direction and administration, cafeteria, and technical areas. It provides a much-needed separation between the public and private functions of the institution, creates a clearly defined and legible route through the building and through its orientation retains a clear visual and emotional connection back to the countryside of which it is an extension. It also serves to easily facilitate the connection and integration of future phases of the institution. It will give a world-class institution the public face it deserves.
