Erläuterungstext

The 240m pedestrian and cycle bridge is sited over the main railway artery between Munich’s central railway station and the city’s historic centre. Crossing a total of 38 railway tracks, the bridge connects two former industrial sites newly redeveloped into high quality office/housing/leisure districts. The bridge also serves to improve the city’s north-south pedestrian and cycle networks, creating an alternative to the adjacent Donnersberger Brücke.

The choice of a single-sided continuous steel Vierendeel truss of varying height with a 5m wide deck provides the structural stability needed to cross the three 70-95m long spans without obstructing the views from the bridge to the historic skyline of the city. The truss, with its evenly spaced vertical posts, introduces a calm and repetitive visual pattern that blends into the language of the existing built environment. The posts vary their widths adapting to the local shear stresses, making the structural principle of the bridge legible to the everyday user.

The gently curved plan creates a crescent-like colonnade with the spaces between the posts filled with comfortable timber benches sheltered by a vertical glass parapet.
