kazakhstan and future energy
“Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.”
Albert Einstein

As the world’s population grows and fossil fuels dwindle it is our collective responsibility to manage and reconfigure the way we transform the planet’s natural energy so that we can create a sustainable and prosperous future for the planet and humankind. The Astana EXPO 2017 is a chance to show the world how this can be done.
Changing the way we transform and manage energy means changing the way we live; it means re-evaluating the way we relate both to nature and each other. Kazakh people have always lived close to nature. Over the centuries, through intelligence, strength and sensitivity, they have found ways to thrive in Kazakhstan’s extreme climate. Kazakhstan is now in a unique position to pass on these lessons learned and exchange knowledge with the rest of the world on how we can create a sustainable future.

expo ring
It is our proposal to create a unique Astana structure, a meeting of landscape and building, which encircles a universal forum for the world to meet in 2017. This structure will transform and share natural energy as well as create a comfortable microclimate for both the summer months of the Expo 2017 and many seasons beyond. The EXPO RING is a permanent protective structure that encapsulates a circular space that can be occupied and transformed by temporary structures. National pavilions will be arranged across this space in the Expo mode. At the heart of the forum will be the Kazakhstan pavilion. Following the EXPO Astana will gain a grand enclosed park which can host a multitude of events. The ring structure itself will be the icon of expo 2017; a symbol of the how nature and man together can create a sustainable future.

expo city
The EXPO RING forms the centrepiece of a new city quarter which will be a living and evolving example of a renewable energy city. This will be a city where humans live in harmony with nature. To create this shift we need to reconsider our relationship to not only energy resources but to one another. The EXPO CITY is founded on guiding principles of community, connectivity, energy and food production, energy storage, bio-diversity, health and knowledge. The monumental green axis that starts at the Bayterek reaches EXPO CITY and branches out to become a green landscape that meanders its way through the city quarter and spreads out to connect with the adjacent quarters. It will provide open and green spaces for both inhabitants and visitors of Astana, and will symbolize the unique connection of men and nature, of the city and the green steppes of Kazakhstan.

urban concept
When we look at the urban form of Astana we see a classic intertwining of man-made grid with the organic forms of nature. Above all watercourses and lakes interact and play with the planned urban structure, and vice versa. The EXPO CITY Masterplan intertweaves the rectilinear city grid with the fluid forms of nature as a representation of the reciprocal relationship between the ecology and humankind. The green axis that starts at the Bayterek reaches EXPO CITY and branches out to meander its way through the city quarter and spread out to connect with the adjacent quarters. By allowing the landscape to weave through the EXPO CITY and its surroundings a green network is formed that links every inhabitant closely to both nature and their fellow citizens.
