Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

Applying the criteria of the RFP, the jury appreciated the project for the following qualities:
Non-consumptive attitude towards the site, leaving a significant area for future development on the “field of dreams”, while providing an adequate relation to the southern neighbors and an inspiring, economic open space in phase 1, corresponding to the site conditions.
Clear urban layout, creating a good sense of urban density.
Potential to create a variety of identities
A robust and compact organization of the functions, defining well integrated neighborhoods and a road network, together providing good orientation and identification.
Student village with well proportioned spaces in various scales, providing successfully the frame for the creation of communities.
A central open space, creating identity and democratic attitude as a gathering place in the heart of the campus.
Covered pathway network.
Relation to the housing neighborhood in the West, creating an urban situation.
Academic village with attractive layout and location.
Adequate technical concept with potentials for optimization
Clear phasing concept
Applying the criteria of the RFP, the jury has doubts in regard of the following parts of the design, resulting in the recommendation to review these elements in case the authors are chosen for further development:
The central axis, creating an adequate entrance and leading successfully into the heart of the campus, should either finish on the main space or continued in the same line, but not off-set to the continuation of the entrance axis.
The location of the administration block should be reviewed in regard to its better integration into the clusters. Potentially another function could be assigned to this northern building, as it is a valuable part for the overall composition and orientation point from the streets. Perhaps this could be designated as an industrial park, offering rental space to industry partners.
The location and orientation of the sports filed should be reconsidered, as well as the size and location of the sports center, aiming for a potential continuation of the cluster blocks southwards into the “field of dreams”.
The architecture of the buildings on the main court is understood as an example for the potential of the master plan. In particular the architectural expression and the connections between the buildings on the northern edge should be reviewed, potentially leading to a reduction in variety. It was felt that the three distinct formal languages did not mesh well together and dissipated the power of the central axis.
The roof shapes of the student dormitories and lecture halls require either a technical justification or could be rearranged into less expressive shapes.
The eastern row of cluster buildings should be reviewed in regard of their potential to air transition for the ventilation of the campus.
The closing of the open ground floors of the lecture hall should be reduced if possible. The jury admired the idea of the open ground floor but felt it was being compromised by the lecture halls at the ground floor.
There were concerns that the proximity of the lecture hall buildings to each other where in contravention of building regulations of Vietnam.
The provided spaces and building sizes (GFA) should be adjusted according the program to support constructability within the established budget.
