Erläuterungstext

Tampere is moving forward and has successfully merged its old industrial economy with new elements, which forms the base for its competitive “knowledge industry”. The next step in the city’s transition is to develop the railway zone into an area which fits the high ambitions of Tampere. The railway station of Tampere is one of the most important hubs in the Finnish railway network. The client’s wish to extend the current train station and upgrade its urban surroundings is a logical evolution for one of the biggest cities of Finland.

The Tampere Travel and Service Centre is the catalyst for the development of a dynamic and coherent new city part. “Tampere Silmukka” stands for an integral vision as a connector to both sides of the railway in a physical and cognitive manner. It becomes a new hub for transport, people, program and knowledge. By introducing new routes on different levels, various programs, viewing lines and public space, the districts of Tulli and Tammela become part of the city centre. The railway area transforms from a barrier into ‘Stitch’ (Silmukka). New loops are created between surrounding districts and between the local and the regional scale.

Central to our proposal is the functioning of the travel and service centre. By interweaving the design of the long distance transfer hub with the public infrastructure of the city of Tampere, a new significant entrance to the city is created. The bus terminal will not only drastically improve the connectivity between the two sides of the railway, but also provide the grounds for a new hub of program and functions on the Tulli/Tammela side: the “Tampere Hub”.

The new station area of Tampere, together with the Travel and Service Centre, will obtain the right structure and dimensions within the urban fabric of the city. The block structure has a small grain and is in balance with the topography that characterizes this city. The densification of the small scale urban surrounding the station, will expose the new station area, integrating it within the whole urban fabric of Tampere. The delicate urban tissue with vistas and a mix of functions will enhance the livability and atmosphere of the station area.

Within the framework we create, the interaction of human activities, where exchanges can flourish. The focus lies hereby on public spaces, green places, connections and semi-public indoor spaces. In this way the Tampere station area will become a vibrant and inspiring city part, (inter)nationally well known for its innovative approach to urban development. It will become a place with synergy between business, research, technology, creative industry and inhabitants, reflecting the bright future of Tampere as an ideal place for working and living.
