Ribbons of Water
Knitting the Past, Present, & Future

Water, Weaving Cultures
The new North Wing Addition is conceived with water as the essence of its spirit, its experience, and its reality. The wet / dry cycles of Mumbai create specific seasonal experiences that push the design of the North Wing to embrace the torrential downpours of the monsoons, or to be very aware of the lack of water and unrelenting heat of the summer sun. The parasol shading provided by the undulating waves of the roof responds to the dramatic awareness of the central role water plays in Mumbai.

Weaving Art into the City
Just as Mumbai is not monolithic, but rather a diverse fabric histories and cultures, the North Wing Addition weaves the city, the landscape, and the art museum into a rich tapestry of experiences. Far from a traditional ‘white box’ museum, indoor and outdoor art experiences weave together to allow for each visitor to have their own unique, unscripted engagement each time they visit. At each museum level, whether underground next to the sunken Rain Gardens or high above, taking in a panorama of the city, a sense of place is created for each patron to enhance a connection between themselves, the art, the city, and the land.

Global Innovations Rooted in Local Technologies
Centuries of Indian knowledge have developed from local traditions creating languages of stepped wells, agricultural terracing, mushrabiya as shading, and other iconographic imagery of inlay and textiles. Continuity of these technologies was paramount in the design of the ribbed structures of the parasol roof, water retention ponds, and natural ventilation techniques. Through the design and construction process, the team’s aim was to reinterpret these traditional systems in contemporary ways to create an aesthetic bridge between India’s rich history and global innovations of today.

An Ecological Oasis of the Soul
Though bound by two busy streets oozing with the hectic pace of Mumbai city life, entry to the site harbors a tranquility and serenity to create a transformative escape. The design prioritizes establishing a sense of place over an architectural statement. The site IS the museum. The Blue Garden, Red Garden, and Water Gardens intertwine to juxtapose art with Mumbai’s traditional flora. The Rain Garden’s floating plane of water is like a magic carpet reflecting the lush landscape and historical context. Stepping down into the Rain court below, the cooling effects of water, shade, and garden allows visitors to center themselves for a meaningful art experience.

24 hrs in Byculla
As one of the largest green spaces in Mumbai, and in one of the most historically significant neighborhoods of Byculla, the museum’s focus shifts from a core museum program to include the open spaces and amenities of the site. The North Wing and Museum Park would become an icon and hub of the arts community, a place for education, discourse, and the exchange of ideas. With Mumbai becoming an increasingly global and diverse city, the new design provides as much flexibility in spaces as possible to adapt to ever changing cultural habits, demographics, and events.
