Architectural Technical Description
The unique location of the project, in the middle of the City Park, away from the urban context, requires a strong gesture as an answer. A building that lives from its own energy through its own beautiful design. Our concept grows like a flower in the middle of the park, making people curious about its form and its content.
What inspired us the most, was one of the sentences in the tender: “...metaphorically should music be turned into a building in the context of the 21st century...”
Our goal was to create something that has a strong identity and that could be seen as a sculpture standing in the middle of the park. We decided to make a building which simultaneously serves as a symbol, easily recognizable and unforgettable. A building that offers a lot of public space as well as provides an exciting interior. The organic form seems rather complex at first glance, but through its complexity it offers various spatial experiences and gives the visitors the opportunity to discover the building from different angles and interact with music turned into “stone”.
We transformed music into architecture by looking at the typical annotation elements in music like the G clef or the F clef, which are also examples of visual representation of music. We started to develop a form inspired by these elements and details we could find in them. By creating two intertwined identical forms we created the closed part for the museum and the open public part for the open air theatre. Instead of changing the existing landscape we wanted to preserve it as much as possible and integrate it into our concept. The two forms create a dichotomy of the void and filled space. The form also improves the acoustics and provides noise protection to the open air theatre.
The two parts, beside the open and closed part, also create an object which does not have a front or back, it shows the same dynamic and beauty from each of its sides and creates a balance with the beautiful nature of the park. We felt it was really important that this building preserves the same beauty and experience for 360°.
The open air theatre provides a great concert space, but also serves as a place to rest and enjoy the view on the lake and the park. On the other side, the interior of the museum plays with the musical curves of the outer shell to create an interesting space for the visitors.
The visit to the House of Music starts in the ground floor which offers all the information about the exhibition and experiences in the building, but also offers additional content like the museum shop. The museum bar (located on the first floor) is also directly connected to the ground floor through the open air theatre, and offers a splendid view of the park and the front plaza of the museum. Ground floor is also the place where you choose your route through the building. If you came for a concert in the state of the art performance hall of the Hun¬garian House of Music, take the wide staircase leading you down in the centre of the building. The staircase is a modern interpretation of traditional theatre entrance halls where staircases served as a meeting point for the visitors before going to watch the show. If you came for the permanent exhibition the best way to experience it, is by taking the ramp leading up. (Architects tip: when going up, don´t forget to take a look back at the protected plaza in front of the building) The temporary exhibition is accessible by the ramp coming from the permanent exhibition space, or by taking the elevator or the stairs to the second floor leading directly to it. You can finish your visit by going to the sound dome now located at the same floor of the temporary Exhibition. After this you can go down through the very middle of the building by the elevator, or stop for a coffee at the first floor. These are the two main visitor routes through the building, but we also added a staircase which also serves as an emergency exit. The third route through the building is reserved for the staff of the museum. We created a core with its own elevator, a staircase and the artefacts elevator. This leads from the added garage for the personnel in the underground floor directly to the offices located on the third floor that is now dedicated only to the staff. The office space provides a beautiful view of the lake and the castle and at the same time to the exhibition not to lose the connection with the main area of the building. Natural lighting creates a pleasant and relaxed working environment.
Site Relations
We believe that it is important to give something back to the city with the buildings we build, in this case to provide an interesting public place for the people of Budapest. A place where they can enjoy the park and the building at the same time. The open stage uses a concept which was already known to the old Romans using the beauty of the nature, in this case the lake, as the background for the performances. We decided to preserve the original park on the North West side of the building.
