FIABCI Prix d´Excellence Germany 2016

The Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule is currently spread out over the city of Aachen. The plan for Campus Melaten on the north-west edge of the city is set up to concentrate institutions that research production and transport technology. The master plan of the campus comprises of 6 clusters in a crescent shape, each cluster designated for a specific research area. The Logistics Cluster will be developed by Ante4C and MVSA.

The cluster clearly has two faces. The official address en entrance facing the boulevard, the west side borders the forest like hills. Inside the cluster MVSA has introduced a courtyard. This Agora is a central meeting point for all the users of the cluster and additionally gives a clear address to the buildings that don’t border the boulevard. Since the buildings consist mainly of offices, laboratories and workshops a new typology was developed: the ‘Pick-up’. All the buildings in the cluster form a combination of a main building with office programme and a ‘loading platform’ with the workshops.

The development of the campus and cluster is phased: the Pro-LOG building will be the first to be built, housing the FIR, ‘Forschungsinstitut für Rationalisierung‘, and the WZL, ‘Werkzeugmaschinenlabor’. The factory, laboratories and office floors are spatially directly related to one another, involving all the users in the central theme, and thus form a ‘Logistics Theatre’.
