Erläuterungstext

The four groups involved in Over-the-Rhine Brewery District Charrette in 2009 put forward the idea of a pedestrian street which traverse the site from south to north. In the proposals, it is also referred to an iconic building north of the pedestrian. LIVE ∙MAKE mixed use is based on this fact and continues the idea of pedestrian axis through the site. The existing building is divided into two, higher on the plot, the iconic building stands on the hill.

The two elements are faces. They communicate with each other through a set of shed recalling the industrial buildings of the late 19th century. The existing building became workshops, the iconic building became apartments.

The existing building, divided into two hosts in its western part and workshops in the eastern part light industrial units. The cut created an opportunity to highlight the sales area, the wood workshop, sewing workshop and the main axis of the workshops. This axis is an essential component of the organization Make the building. As an artery, it serves all the elements. Receiving, shipping, storage members, rental tools and toilets that are used by all menbers have a central position around this axis. The workshop was designed as a flexible space that can respond to changes in machine tools. Walls are line up on colonnades and can be moved as needed.

On the roof, the concrete slab is removed to provide natural lighting necessary to artistic creation. The new roof sheb stand on existing concrete columns. The opposition between the concrete columns and the fineness of the metal roof creates an impression of space and lightness in workshops. By sunny day, the solar panels will create electricity to run the machine tools on the site. When the sun is at zenith in summer, sun screens avoid overheating workshops.

The rehabilitation of the existing building is along two axes, one step backwards in the re-opening of the large bay windows to provide light and views, but also an insight into the future by providing design light shed holder solar panels.

Facing workshops, dwellings have been designed to provide the greatest possible pleasure their occupants while meeting the specifications: a functional confrontation between Make and Live. Although the dwelling are isolated from the workshops, noises, agitations and odors, they also offer the possibility of a direct vision within them. The artists can, at any time of the day when they are in their apartment, watching their work, think, and have a new creative idea.

All accommodations offer all triple orientation. They all stays in double height with a breathtaking view of the city of Cincinnati. The double height is important, it opens the space, and thus the minds of artists. These spaces are generous, they can accommodate traditional activities, but also because of their size and their high ceilings, artistic activities such as sculpture, painting on large canvas, achieving performance ... Each apartment has a space storage of artwork. On the first floor apartments, there is always the master suite. Always offering a view across, it also allows the vision of the workshop.

The choice of a new shed roof covering the workshops become a project topic. Transposed to the building Live, sheds become vertical. Face to face, but reversed, they offer optimal transparency. The short sides now hosting vegetable. Facing south-west, deciduous plants will provide sun protection during summer and let the sun go in winter to heat the apartments. As for the sheds workshops, external blinds screens provide sun protection if necessary.

In the early stages of the housing tower, the administration uses the slope of the land to create two meeting rooms on the ground floor and first floor northeast blind side but glass southwest side. They both have view on the double height reception. The second floor houses the 10 offices.
