Erläuterungstext

Our project starts with a gaze at the history of Saratov, which shows a profound connection to nature. Over time the urban fabric of the city has expanded and the relationship between city and nature has been diminished. The area has transformed from a city in nature to pieces of nature in a larger urban region.

To prevent irreversible loss and damage to the natural systems there is a growing urgency for collective action to protect the biodiversity in and around cities. The project introduces solutions and initiatives that point in a green direction and introduces all the extraordinary benefits of being a city closely linked to nature. Nature provides diverse life supporting and life enhancing contributions to people in cities and towns. These gifts from nature make human life both possible and worth living. All cities critically depend on healthy interconnected ecosystems within and around them, so it is essential that nature is fully integrated into urban planning and development.

What if the development of the 5 competition sites could kick start a larger journey and inspire the development of the entire urban region towards a sustainable city in close contact to nature. We believe that this competition creates a unique potential to discuss and recalibrate the future development of the city. To recreate the historic link between Saratov and nature. In order to do so, we have created a toolset that goes beyond the specific competition guidelines to become a strategic planning tool for the city.

Nature is activated and put on display through interaction. By establishing a green network where meeting places, activities and local communities are present, a network of spaces and experiences are created.

These experiences and spaces will have a connection to the natural setting in which they are built. Emphasis is placed on creating a local anchoring and an activation of the natural qualities which is already there. The improved mobility and the creation of a network of experiences while passing through nature and the city must be facilitated through a wide range of activities and new structures.

When building, the environment needs to be in first place. This means for instance native species are preferred in terms of planting or light pollution is reduced to a minimum in order to allow rest and recovery for the environment. One of the key targets of the proposed designs is an increase of the quality of open spaces. This applies both for the citizens of Saratov as well as for the plants and animal species. The impact of built developments are to be optimized and to be reduced to a minimum.

With a respect for nature and the changeability of the landscape, structures are touching the ground lightly in every sense possible in order to disturb the flora and fauna of nature as little as possible. The local building traditions in Saratov are characterized by wooden
timber constructions. The impact of wooden constructions on the environment is minimal and is therefore a relevant and sustainable construction method to include in the project.
By working with existing and local traditions, the identity of the place and the city is strengthened and clarified.
