Erläuterungstext

Camp Mare is a new district in the city of Tongyeong (South Korea), a place where tradition and innovation come together to drive the redevelopment of the region. Occupying the derelict Shina shipyard, it celebrates its heritage by re-using several industrial structures on the site, and also aims at the future, introducing a range of new programs and buildings to create a hub for craftmanship, touristm, research and development and housing.

The site is bordered on the north and the south by the bay and the Mireuk Mountain, respectively. The project brings the sea and the mountain into the site through large incisions. The water comes in as rectangular bays cut into the land; the mountain comes in as three-dimensional strips of parkland connecting the peak to the waterfront. These moves embrace the site from all directions, further emphasizing the project’s harmonious location between mountain and sea.

All physical qualities of the masterplan together with the proposed phasing and program, allow the division of the project into five distinct neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has its unique character, achieved by a mixture of program and building groups. These five neighborhoods give Camp Mare its identity as a dynamic, colorful, and lively new district in Tongyeong. It caters to the broadest range of users and interests, becoming a desirable and vibrant destination for locals and visitors alike.
