Erläuterungstext

The Adlershof Forum is the entrée to the university campus and its public access from Rudower Chaussee. Answering to the wider spatial context, the forecourt is divided into a front and a backward area.

Adjacent to Rudower Chaussee there will be a paved, level surface admitting multifunctional uses, while in the back we shall create a closed-off green oasis for leisurely rest. Large-size timber decks invite to sit down and relax. These „islands“ are designed to become meeting points and spaces for communication in specific sites.

The same paving is used for both parts of the forecourt, binding them together again. Strips of concrete flagstone interchange with strips of granite setts.

The changes in level of the forecourt are dictated by the laboratory buildings (registered as protected monuments) whose ground floor levels are situated below street level. The difference in level between the street and the inner forecourt is surmounted employing slopes, steps and retaining walls.

The sidewalk of Rudower Chaussee widens in front of the forum, joining it to the forecourt. A staircase leads onto the forecourt in three broad steps. Integrated into the staircase are two flat columns designed with contemporary materials, meant as an abstraction of the sculptures of the Humboldt brothers in front of the university’s main building in Unter den Linden. Campus directions are integrated into the columns on eye level. The columns form a strategic spatial hold for the forecourt.

The exposed position of the historic buildings seems to call for nighttime illumination. Ground spots shall illuminate the front ends of each building. Light strips lining the staircase and the farther edge of the wall define the forecourt by night and serve visitors’ orientation.
