The old situation of the square is characterized primarily by a lack of openness as well as considerable degradation of the public space. The appearance of the original design has been substantially degraded by numerous chaotic interventions.
The idea behind the new Albertus Magnus square, is the promotion of intensive personal contact between users of the campus. We propose a forum with a wide range of different yet interconnected spaces that stimulate the intentional and unforeseen interactions between students, professors, university staff and perhaps residents and employs of the nearby hospital. The forum is transformed into the heart of a vibrant campus, where learning, research, living, relaxing and meeting go hand in hand. The existing public spaces, Albertus-Magnus-Platz and the Forum and brought together through design into one coherent spaces ,which we call the Albertus Magnus Forum.
The unique paving patterns between the lecture hall and main building is used as a starting point for the shape and design language of the new surfaces. The lecture hall pattern is restored while in areas outside the monument the pattern is interpreted in a new and fresh way.
The characteristic lines are reproduced on the bridge with different colors and textures of asphalt. The forum area receives a finer scale paving, differing subtly from the rest of the central region. This size of tiles facilitate connections to the rounded language of the green islands.
The green islands provide defined rooms for the forum without restricting connections on a larger scale. Low vegetation with lawn and plating supports the friendly and welcoming nature of the place. The flow of movement of students is softly conducted through the composition. The existing monument green island is integrated into the new design almost like an archeological vestige, and remains accessible to everyone.
The bike parking is seamlessly integrated, making use of the existing topography, with vast open entrances allowing light to flow in from all directions. The new kiosk becomes a vital pivot in the link between north and south, with a friendly transparent core.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht
„Der gesamte Zentralbereich erhält ein einheitliches und einladendes Erscheinungsbild. Daher auch der Name des Entwurfs, der sich aus dem „Albertus-Magnus-Platz“ und dem Forum zusammensetzt: „Albertus-Magnus-Forum“. Das Forum ist momentan deutlich vom Platz abgeschnitten. Die neue Gestaltung verbindet die beiden Teile gleichberechtigt zu einem harmonischen Ganzen“. (Erläuterung des Entwurfsverfassers)
Der Entwurf besteht aus interessanten Teilräumen die übergangslos miteinander verbunden sind. Bestehend sind die spielerische Leichtigkeit und die sympathische Grundeinstellung der Planungsidee. Die Texturen der Platzbeläge sind gut differenziert, das gilt insbesondere für die fließenden Übergänge zwischen dem Entwurf von Grümmer und den neuen Flächen. Das Gleiche gilt für die gut platzierte Möblierung.
Das Konzept für die Tiefgarage wird positiv gesehen sowohl wegen der großzügigen Garagenzufahrt als auch wegen der Möglichkeiten die Garage ausreichenden mit Tageslicht zu erhellen.
Der Entwurf ist denkmalrechtlich unproblematisch.
Die Präsentation des Entwurfs, die Vorstellung der beteiligten Mitarbeiter der Büros Karres en Brands Landschapsarchitecten B.V. und Toponauten überzeugte ebenso wie die Darstellung von Arbeitsweise und Projektentwicklung der Büros.
