DRIVHUS / GREEN HOUSE

Stockholm is growing, and the Office for City Planning need new facilities that can promote new ways of working and also be an open space for interaction between the City and the public. This is the space where the future Stockholm will be developed, with new housing, workplaces and infrastructure for the Swedish capital. The new office building will be situated in an area dominated by sports arenas and shopping, just south of the historic city core.

THE COMPETITION

In the summer of 2013, a group of five architectural teams were invited to give their suggestions for a new office building, that will be the new symbol of the environmentally friendly, democratic and growing Stockholm region. After a pro-longed competition process, the winning entry was chosen in June 2014. It’s called “Drivhus”, meaning “Green-House” in Swedish. The team includes Swedish architectural studio Urban Design, Madrid-based SelgasCano and landscape architect studio Land. Sweco Engineers have been responsible for statics and environmental questions. The architects responsible for the design are Erik Jarlöv, José Selgas, Jesús Azpeitia, Helena Glantz and Lucia Cano and landscape architect Anders Kling.

BUILDING CONCEPT

The building has a higher part that is oriented along a quite heavy trafficked road on the eastern side, and two lower wings around a central park/plaza. On the western side of the park, a new housing block is embracing the other side of the park and creating an enclosed oasis in an otherwise harsh and large-scaled urban environment. The two ground floors open up to visitors on three intertwined levels. These floors contain exhibition areas, café and lecture rooms. The whole building is wrapped in an outer shell of ETFE, a thin, transparent and translucent plastic, hence creating a cushioning greenhouse space all around the office floors and on top of the building. The greenhouse spaced is used to muffle the surrounding traffic and create a vital, healthy environment inside the building. Circular stair-towers and elevator shafts make up the load-bearing system. The layout of the offices is flexible and can be altered over time to suite different organisations and ways of working.
