Dům kultury města Ostravy becomes Philharmonic.

After more than 50 years of existence “The House of Culture” has the opportunity to follow the transformation of art and time. The aim of the project is to redefine the unity of the existing building and to link it to its diverse surroundings. Architecture-Studio wants to give a new dimension to this iconic building. The architectural intervention revitalises the use and image of “The House of Culture” by making it more responsive to changes in its activities whilst conserving Jaroslav Fragner’s existing listed building of 1961. “The House of Culture” is the anchor of the cultural life of Ostrava and the Philharmonic construction will be a deep metamorphosis. Contrary to the classical idea of the actual building, we propose to create a new hybrid entity with an integrated historical face directed towards the boulevard, and a modern face directed towards the park. The new entity is implanted on a large platform in the city linking together the old and the new wings. This one-meter-high granite platform is an urban stage for the Philharmonic. The new Philharmonic is a fusion between the historical building and the new building. Architecture-Studio designs thus a new entity with an aesthetic opposition between history and modernity. Symbolically, the passage between the historical building and the new concert hall substitutes the old scenery stage with this spatial installation. The new symphonic hall and the chamber music hall are destined to create the new home for symphonic music with unparalleled acoustic conditions in the Czech Republic.
