Erläuterungstext

Due to its geographical conditions and its historical importance, Gallipolli Peninsula promises a lot. Unfortunately perceptions and experiences created by the current situation are not as significant as they should be. Haphazard additions that have been made on the competition areas present extremely chaotic conditions within the peninsula.

At this point, our observation related to the Gelibolu Peninsula states as follows:

Emerged perhaps haphazardly; visitors’ relationship with the peninsula does not create a planned access hierarchy, both in upper and lower scales. This eliminates the potential of holistic impression of the area, as well as the integrity of individual focus points; therefore the possibilities of rich and multilayered experiences. Most visible indicator of this is the feeling that narrative and spatial approaches are created without listening to, without apprehending the soul of the site. This way of building results in interventions that does not speak to each other and does not prove to be coherent.

Reflecting on this observation, we have had chance to re-consider the semantic and spatial holism the site should possess with this competition. We believe that this holism we are trying to achieve is possible through the concept of ‘distancing’. The undefined, unrestricted and disconnected relationships we have mentioned not only allows any sort of distancing, but also results in an exaggerated narrative: a weak spatial setup results in an exaggerated narrative within the space.

At this point we aim to distance ourselves from the focus points (both on upper and lower scales) and understand them holistically. Through this we are able to construct new spatial and semantic relationships, and with distancing ourselves we can create a possibility to listen the voice of the geography, a gap to sense the soul and the site.
