Erläuterungstext
The given site for the Maison du Livre et du Patrimoine will allow the completion of a multitude of urban reassignments and transformations that make the Flon district the cradle of XXI century Lausanne. By modifying the slopes of the Montbenon hill, the project will come to link, transversely to the slope and longitudinally in the valley, the different urban entities adjacent to the Flon district.
Specific constraints such as the location underneath a viaduct, between street and slope, pushed the project into supporting strong ideas. By proposing a series of horizontal plates hosting the Library, the Archives, the Comic Center, the Administration and ending in interior balconies, the diagonal induced by the profile of the bridge generates a visual, spacial and social relation between the various uses of the building.
Thus will mingle all the functional elements of the Maison: people of all ages and staff from different sectors.
Vast spaces appropriated for open-access reading offer two radically different environments, an urban surrounding filtered through a semi-transparent façade to the north, and a natural surrounding open to the forest and slope to thesouth, with shifting light and colors throughout the seasons.
