Meet in Old Stavanger

Erläuterungstext
The architectural firm Eder Biesel won with the proposal ‘Meet in Old Stavanger’. This design model focuses on creating a new and exciting meeting place for visitors and inhabitants of Old Stavanger. “We want to create a vibrant and active museum in an authentic location”, says Christine Biesel, one of the architects who presented the winning design.
The new museum will be positioned next to the Norwegian Canning Museum, in a completely new building in the existing museum’s ‘backyard’. The winning design, which shows modern architecture interacting with the authentic historical environment, confirms Eder Biesel’s insight into the urban context and circumstances of the site.
“The co-location of these museums offers a unique opportunity for us to tell about Stavanger’s industrial history”, says Siri Aavitsland, chief executive officer of Museum Stavanger (MUST).

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht
In light of the competition brief, the jury’s evaluation criteria were as follows (in un-prioritized order):
The building project should
• exploit the site’s potential and relate well to the Canning Museum and surrounding buildings
• appear open, attractive and inviting for public use
• use space efficiently, be functional, have good logistical features and meet programmed museal needs
• enable flexibility as regards museal, exhibitionary and technical developments over time
• meet universal design requirements
• fulfil technical demands in rational ways and be cost-effective to build
• be efficient and economical to use and maintain
The jury, in its deliberations, discussed these criteria thoroughly and systematically. It put less emphasis on detail-level solutions and strove instead to select a proposal that is visionary and flexible over time, with a concept robust enough to accommodate the changes expected to arise in the detail-development phase and in the implementation phase.
