Erläuterungstext

An architectural design concept for the building of
The Museum of Modern Art
In Warsaw

Urban planning

Warsaw is supposed to receive a new architectural landmark within the area of the Palace of Culture and Science.

Along the ul. Marszalkowska the building alignment is carried on and strengthened at the edges of the perimeters by completely cultivating the range in the northeast of the palace with a building block. In place of the new museum, in the east of the palace, the building alignment is split apart. The interruption extends the street space and introduces a generous place.

A monolith occupies the large place and structures it in a museum vestibule and a smaller, more protected place between museum and Palace.

The monolith means as much as „stone from a casting“.

Which purpose does the monolith serve?

It is to cause a change of consciousness for humans and to disconcert the viewers by its unusual form and homogeneous surface. The building has a common scale, is difficult to seize and appears mysteriously. It prepares the visitors for a new, different world inside the museum.

The architecture makes the building itself become the sculpture.
The staging tries to create a sensuous ménage à trois between the body of the sculpture, the area of the architecture and the body of the viewer.

The aesthetic dialogue between the new crystalline shape and the ancient Palace of Culture and Science is ment to become the image of a city, which aims for a productive stress ratio between history and present. Regarding urbanism and content the Museum of Modern Art functions on the interface of past and future.

Architecture

The Museum of Modern Art receives a remarkable, most idiosyncratic form, which celebrates excitingly its iconful image.
Although it recruits with the design’s uniqueness, the Museum of Modern Art functions as a hightech machine, which offers the most possible flexibility for the client regarding the interior design and spatial arrangement. For sure, its appearance is eye-catching, as well as multifaceted and always offers surprising elements.

The external skin reflects the environment, while its interior is supposed to inspire the curator as a „black box“ of hidden possibilities.

While one is being drawn by the escalators into the center of the Museum, there is always a new sense of space and consistently the changed sensual experience will reflect the illusion of a unknown building.

Topographically, the structural shell creates a transition from the street level to the Palast’s entrance approximately 4 meters above. Also, the Metro entrance is extensively integrated into the polygonal area structure and by this way another layer regarding urban planning is added to the site and the museum.

The museum building is accessible from two levels. The main entrance located on the east side guides directly into a spacious lobby. The generous ground floor is supposed to develop as a art venue of Warsaw. It is accessible from the museum yard and offers various institutions for information, communication and entertainment: The museum shop, the reading room in the back of the museum; also the auditory and the Community Art Project each with a separate entrance. From here, it is possible to access all museum rooms. The lobby is surrounded by adjoining museum rooms such as service, security and coat check. The second entrance (approaching from the direction of the Palace of Culture and Science) and the museum restaurant are located on the mezzanine level (+4 meters). Attached to the restaurant there is a generous terrace which is orientated towards the Palace of Culture and Science. The underground levels are accessible below this mezzanine level. On the ground floor there is a corridor connecting the second part of the building where the rentable areas are located.

From the main hall the upper floors are accessible by the elevators where the rooms for the Education Center and the museum administration are accomodated in a balanced assortment. All these rooms are arranged around the centric atrium which pervades the complete building. Due to the selected facade construction the concept enables a precise and individual illumination and in this way the use of the back rooms in all levels of the main hall. The roof top cafe and the roof top activities are approachable on the 5th level. An unforgettable view over Warsaw and the great museum foreyard where large objects can be exposed presents itself to the visitor.

The museum wing (northern building part)

The large exhibition hall is arranged on the ground floor, all the other exhibition areas can be reached by using the escalators and gather around the centric courtyard.
By escalators with different lenghts the visitors enter the mystically glimmering slot, cross the canyon, catch first impressions of the exhibition through wall punctures and finally reach the different exhibition areas. All museum levels are individually available and combinable arbitrarily with one another. The exhibition areas receive regulated daily and artificial light by polygonal slots in the outer skin.

Usable areas (tower)

In the southern building part all kinds of rentable areas are organized around an atrium. The entrance is possible either from the museum or the the entry on the southeast side of the building.
On the ground floor the buildings offers possible exhibition areas for sculptures or installations.

Exhibition technology

The Museum of Modern Art corresponds functionally and technically to the most modern requirements of international library loan. It offers all conditions to its operators in order to take part on the highest level in globalised exhibition enterprise. An innovative, cost saving air condition technology fulfills all defaults of important loan givers.

A generous delivery, depots and workshops as well as modern light and safety-relevant mechanisms are planned for a professional completion of exhibition projects. An underground parking offers space for 91 museum-internal and 1284 public parking bays. As a multidiscipline exhibition, auction and agency place for contemporary art, new media and photography the Museum of Modern Art disposes of a differentiated space and functional program.

Construction and materials

A reinforced concrete structure forms the constructional base frame of the building. The construction enables column-free and spacious exhibition levels.

The floor finish of the museum foreyard consists of black imbued, large sized concrete plates, which rise slowly beginning from the horizontal yard and turn smoothly into the external facade of the museum.

Spymirror black - optical thin film coated glass - covers homogeneous the external facade and the roof of the museum. Only at important places the facade changes from the dark reflecting surface into a transparent thin skin.

In the office area and the Education Center the outer skin is planned as a double facade in order to achieve a natural ventilation.

Individually set slots convey systematic daylight into the museum area.
