Erläuterungstext
The museum aims to carefully consider the heritage of the Serlachius ensemble and to develop the whole area in terms of its landscape values as a place for art exhibitions. „Saarikehys“ is detached from the manor building. Through this decision, the new building focuses on the park-like situation and the extreme beauty of the surrounding landscape.
The proposed pavilion aligns itself to the Manor building, recreating the former bridge connection to Taavetinsaari, reinterpreting Paul Ollson‘s park design from 1935. Instead of competing for attention with the existing building, the proposal respectfully takes the Manor building as well as the landscape qualities into account. The new position smartly allows an independent expression and also catches the most prominent views and atmospheres without sacrificing any of the current qualities, such as the free green areas and the open waterfront.
Instead of placing a building on the island itself, the concept follows the idea of not affecting the untouched nature of Taavetinsaari, but surrounding the circular archetype of the island with a subtile lightweight construction floating above the ground. By cutting out the circular inner courtyard, the building naturally creates a ring-like tour throughout the exhibition spaces.
