Projektbeschreibung
House M, built in a Dutch village South of the city of Eindhoven, stands on a street lined with only ordinary brick houses. The ordinary character of the area is perpetuated by a set of strict regulations. Our design approach was to follow these regulations to the letter. The volume of the house and its archetypical profile follows directly from the regulatory eave and ridge height. Next to this, the materials, the use of red-brownish brick and common dark-grey roof tiles, follow directly from the prescribed aesthetic guidelines. But, beyond this work-to-rule, the rigorous and abstract detailing – all window frames, gutters and other façade appendages are placed out of sight – produces an architectural aesthetic clearly distinct from its ordinary surroundings.
The façade of the house is fully made from brick laid in a common bond with Flemish headers. Several strategically positioned hoppers emphasize the mass of the brick envelope and accommodate the entrance, “inverted” bay windows and loggia. Planes with a vertical bond, which reflect daylight in a slightly different manner, continue the window distribution pattern all around the facade. All window frames are placed sunken behind the outer façade leaf, showing the masonry reveals, sills and lintels.
Internally the house consists of a sequence of rooms: The house is divided into four bays, each bay further subdivided into a “served” and “serving” room. The “serving” rooms orientated to the north harbour the storage, pantry, cloakroom, staircase, toilets and kitchen. And the “served” rooms, orientated to the south, consist of the home office, living room, dining room and loggia. The enfilade created by connecting all the “served” rooms creates several lines of sight running through the whole house. This way a view of the public street is made possible from the kitchen and equivalently you can see the back garden from the home-office situated at the other end of the house.
